It is a fine balance. I think 'going along' with the situation, will make future problems even greater and uncontrollable. Calling Trump's bluff also seems to work.

Well, it's only an outward going along. Once EU decide they have a firm enough economic and military basis without the US, they'll be more confident. But who knows when that will be 😐

My worry, is that Europe will do the European thing. When all seems fine, not take steps to build a more independant military.
