The most important decision-making level is the leadership of AFSCME and other unions in the AFL-CIO. I think the question is fine, which of the major unions, in AFL-CIO or not, is biggest (answer is NEA, followed by SEIU and AFSCME). I was an AFSCME member for nine years.

Currently in an AFSCME local. My local is fairly autonomous, we get a decent amount of direction on state-level politics stuff from the Council we're under and I've never directly interacted with the International.

That's good, but the international can put your local in trusteeship if they really don't like something you're doing. Most of their influence is more subtle and has to do with allocating resources and political endorsements and lobbying.

Lol, oh I know about trusteeship. It's a stick they have, but I can't imagine them using it on my local effectively.

It's mostly used when there's an issue of corruption. But in terms of effectiveness, they will walk in and seize the office and everything in it and appoint a trustee to make decisions. Anyway, good you have confidence in your local, always good to see people dedicated to making unions stronger.

At least in the states you can fire those fucks. Up her in Canada we have pigs charged with felonies that sit at home collecting $100k plus for 4 or 5 years before they go to court and fount not guilty. I know of one pig that has three DUIs and had a desk job.
