What do you think the best counter to this is? As in, anything we can do about it? It makes me feel like they really are the enemy of the people.

It sounds silly, conversations help. Before newspapers, it’s how the word was passed, it can be how the word is passed again. It’s just gonna be slow and painful.
the best counter is 1) know who owns your news. we should all know the ownership of every news outlet we interact with blog.barrayar.org/2025/02/18/w... 2) stop giving air to oligarch-owned platforms. don't click them, don't subscribe to them 3) find independent news, there's TONS of it (see embed)
4) teach your friends the same principles. i want a world where everyone, upon seeing a news story, has the first thought "who owns this outlet and what are their motivations" and stops treating the corporate oligarch-owned media as if they became fascist stenographers for no reason
Thanks for the list. This is such an important conversation.
Don't worry too much about it. WAPO and NYT are the walking dead. Zombies rotting from the inside out. Their days will soon be over.
I'm personally at a loss. The richest people in the country have bought up as many media channels as they can and are using them to push propaganda in ways we haven't seen since the Gilded Age Hard to think of ways to fight against that - media literacy and supporting indie journos isn't enough
