I applaud your optimism on the future and I hope you're correct. As a Brit I'm looking in as a concerned observer but the combination of this sociopathic president, this supreme court, the escalating gerrymandering and the race to the furthest possible extreme within particularly the GOP is ominous

Indeed, i think certainly in Europe we are more aware from bitter experience of the dangers of authoritarianism and particularly fascism. It does seem that many in the US are making the same mistake made in Europe in the 30s by either being complacent about or actively appeasing fascism
This is a cultural change that began with Reagan in the 80s. The strides made during the civil rights era had the conservatives cowed to some degree.
However, the far right (evangelical fundie xtians, fascists, neo-nazis, right wing militias, neo-confederates, and various and sundry other racists) partnered up and have been pushing an agenda since. Randian objectivist amorality, xtian nationalism, prosperity gospel.

I dont know if it helps, but it seems facing this monster head on was pretty much inevitable. Wouldve been nice if it wasn't such a fn scary thing to face, and it didnt feel like all that is strong of goodness hasnt been infiltrated by the forces of evil...but we were maybe made for this moment...
Well the outcome is unsure certainly, much may depend on the military top brass, whether they will, when given orders by Trump, be prepared to ignore the constitution they swore to protect..scary stuff for sure
