It is astonishing this still qualifies as news. Trump's trade war on China began in his 1st term, and the press still does not understand tariffs are paid by importers. Truly pathetic. Here is a little primer on tariffs, with reference to the EU "trade deal". www.jandehn.com/post/the-us-...

That was a great article. I’d heard of re-routing just once a couple months ago with regard to China—>Viet Nam. So maybe that route was caught but I’m sure there will be others. But anyway, it’s obvious that even if domestic manufacturing miraculously came back, the American consumer still loses.

Oh! I just realized you’re the author! I’m no economist so perhaps you can tell me…. if tariff is passed on or absorbed, is there anything to be gained by importing your own goods? For ex, VW has a US based subsidiary to import offshore VW parts? Guessing no but trying to think of other loopholes

osboman.bsky.social @osboman.bsky.social

Actually I could see it having the opposite effect depending on pre-tariff reasons for being in the US. Meaning it would drive VW out of the US if any prior advantages are gone.

VW might reduce US presence for 3 reasons. 1. Protected industries lose competitiveness as they lobby (for tariff protection) instead of innovating. 2. Imported intermediary goods also incur tariffs, pushing up production costs. 3. Aggregate demand weakens LT due to fiscal and growth issues. Thanks!

I like Eugene but this isn't nearly tough enough. There is no fucking confusion - why even say that? Get in his face. Substitution? Call bullshit. Ask "You think every product can be substituted, for an equal or lesser cost, from other countries that are also being tariffed?" Drop prices? Fuck off!

What a POS answer... Americans are eventually going to pay a higher price for goods that are imported or materials to make goods in the USA. Beat around the bush all you want, try to spin it so it doesn't sound like Americans are footing the bill.

My tiny company imported from China. Before my goods left the factory, I checked what bracket my goods fell into, filled out quadruplicate form, WROTE A CHECK, and sent it to the appropriate US bureau, who then sent a permit to China for shipping. I figured that into my COGs and calculated my price.
