The entire thing was just so willfully intellectually dishonest; a bunch of guys Rejecting the Dominant Paradigm because it turns out they wanted to replace God and Church with their own power structures. It was a re-run of the early 20th-century Orientalism, but without the Orientalism.
So it was no surprise when a portion of these guys decided that Feminism and Queer Rights were an affront to their genius. How dare other Liberation movements exist! We were supposed to focus on how God is Dead and how clever Richard Dawkins is for explaining it!
It's like fundies who become Satanists: "I'm not just going to reject one illogical thing; I'm going to reject society itself—then I'll feel strong and smug!" [Note: this applies to all the "White Men who are Really Excited to Tell You Why God is Dead", not normal "sky's blue; god's dead" atheists.]
