Watched Howl's Moving Castle with friends today. I think this is the only Ghibli movie where I have anything resembling a hot take and it's probably the most nothing hot take ever. I think it's very good, but not a masterpiece XD

fair tbh it's my favorite but it's bc it was the first one I ever saw, definitely not their objectively best work
I’m in the same camp. Really good, but there are other Ghibli films that surpass it.
I plan to see that next month.
It's a great anti war Ghibli but not the best. It's a charmingly strange romance but leaves out so many important things from the book. It's an almost great story that has the important elements to please a lot of people who don't want to think too deeply but still have a plot.
A fantasy movie where Miyazaki just says “Fuck George W Bush” for the runtime
No idea what happens in the movie I need to watch it a second time
That probably goes to one of two Ghibli movies: The Borrowers adaptation or Princess Mononoke.
I don't think it's Miyazaki's best (that honour is still Princess Mononoke for me) but this one is in the top 5 for me
My hot take has been that it's probably my least favorite Ghibli film, which isn't to say it's bad because they're all good. I just never got the hype that other people gave it.
I think a big part of it is probably because it was the first big new Ghibli film after a lot of people first discovered them when Spirited Away won the Oscar. The first of Disney's big initial push, heavily advertized, all that.
I think there's something to that as a lot younger people speak of Spirited Away as a formative experience for them but don't talk about older titles like Totoro and Nausicaa in the same way.
