Unfortunately my cable internet is about $160/month, and is the only game in town for the bandwidth I need. So I'm one of the poor saps who would be paying 220 if I cared about television.

Eek! I’m just spoiled I guess, we have two competing fiber providers in Minneapolis so it’s quite cheap
I did at my previous residence, but unfortunately at my current one my options are cable or 5g, and to get any decent bandwidth I have to bump to their highest tier. Hopefully one day we get fiber :'(
I know the UK has a very different TV and internet access landscape but my 300 meg fibre is about £30/m and TV licence is £15/m which gives you standard channels like BBC/ITV. That's about $60. Astonishing you're paying hundreds.
Yeah, in most of the US you can only get cable TV and Internet from local monopolies, which vastly overcharge The companies are also quite scammy, they have low introductory rates and then random steep increases I’d wager a lot of people don’t even know they’re spending that much
