That's up to Albertans to do, and it doesn't appear that they see a problem.
That's up to Albertans to do, and it doesn't appear that they see a problem.
Not true. I live in Alberta. Many of us see a problem with Smith. It’s the old rural farmers and oil guys that are stuck. The rest of us can’t stand her.
Not according to Ipsos. The rot is strong in Calgary - the biggest city... "Demographic Trends: The UCP's broad support was a significant factor, and this support was notably stronger in Calgary, especially among older voters."
Older voters. Trust me. I live here. Most younger progressive voters can’t stand her.
In my very conservative rural riding, there are lots of younger O&G bros who would vote conservative if Harper, Manning, Kennedy and Smith showed up in person to steal their trucks, shoot their dogs and set their houses on fire. The cult is real, unfortunately.
They are the minority, not the majority. Sure, the cult is real, but it’s dwindling.
I so hope you’re right🙏🏻. I think a lot of this is a backlash to the enthusiastic support for Thomas Lukaszuk’s Forever Canadian petition (which I am planning to sign tomorrow, yay!). I just wish progressive urban votes counted as much as rural/conservative ones.
We had a huge turnout for this petition a week ago. It’s gaining momentum. My brother in law challenged Smith at one of her separatist town halls in Lloydminster, which is primarily UCP. He said that there were quite a few folks pushing back and challenging her. Progress.
I needed to hear this today- thank you so much! tenor.com/en-CA/view/y...
You’re welcome! Have a great holiday weekend ❤️
I know it, and it's maddening.
This is true. Calgary's money comes from oil. It is impossible to convince someone that something is wrong when their livelihood depends on it.
She wants to take away our CPP and privatize it. She’s very keen on separatism. Most Albertans are not on board with those ideas.
Correct, but some people seem to think a vote for the UCP just gets them the stuff that they want and not the stuff that nobody wants. This is why the UCP is defunding education. Critical thinking would solve this.
I’m an educator. I teach post secondary. I’m doing my part and so are my colleagues. Mobilization and organization are key. Especially against Maple MAGA.
Me too. I’ve served as a union rep and have tried to get people engaged. The level of apathy among faculty is astonishing. If people don’t feel that they are being directly affected (or are being affected less than others), they don’t speak up. Thankfully the students are more willing to resist.
I speak up.
@olbermann.bsky.social likes to tell the story of 2 types of ship-wreck survivors: Those who climb the lifeboat & look to bring in others, vs those who climb in, & kill others with the oar. Corrupt politicians, the moment they grab power, kill other people's options. Education is high on that list.
100%
But when the province's most populous city still serves as a strong base for the UCP what other Albertans think doesn't really matter.
October 20th is our municipal election. It will be a huge wake up call for Smith and her minions.
We are mobilizing. And we vote strategically.
I sure as hell hope so, and I'd welcome some of that mobilizing and strategic voting in Ontario, too...
The same reason Kentuckians can't contemplate a world that revolves around clean energy instead of the coal that's killing them.
Calgary is not the only city in Alberta that matters. edmontonjournal.com/news/politic...
True, but it is where most of the people are, and in many cases it's the large cities that steer the discourse - just like Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver do. They're not the only opinions that matter, but they tend to matter more than others.
This is when *good* gov comes in, and adapts the population to developing times. Japan knows how to do that. But a state that produces Mitch McConnell... They don't believe in investing in people...
We see it too and there are many of us fighting back. The problem is the minority supporting her, and the UCP, are constantly in the media, and the media always gives them air time.
Keep fighting to change it. There's nothing more important than securing a good culture. Want to see what happens without it? Look at the US. Look at Israel.
Hopefully the rest of Canada can un-brainwash enough Albertans..
I live in Alberta. There is a solid David Parker right wing Christian segment, particularly in the rural areas, that will never be un-brainwashed. It's the socially liberal oil and gas industry workers in Calgary that refuse to vote NDP that need to snap out of it.
🎯💯
I'm in Ontario where we helped a lying, dimwitted, former hash dealer, and one-time Trump admirer become premier because people foolishly thought, "Cons have to be better than the Libs, right?". And gifted him 3 elections. If the cavalry is riding-in, it's not coming from Ontario.
Ford used voter suppression masterfully. He has some of the evilest henchpeople in his backroom. Election in dead of February? 4 week campaign? Reporters who are the partners of his key staff? All that after passing legislation DEFUNDING opposition parties and restricting their fundraising.
And yet Ontario is still ahead of Alberta on the intelligence scale in politics. Gives you a sense of how low Alberta is.
Careful there. There is a slice of hardcore Christian Righties calling the shots in that party. NO ONE IN EDMONTON voted for her and almost half of Calgary didn't vote for her. We bring Calgary into the Edmonton fold and it's over for her
I live in the Edmonton area and we did not vote for the lowlife Danielle Smith. We despise her and her government. Everyone I talk to is horrified by what she is doing. Banning books is a Hitler/Trump move. How do we stop her? Especially those who didn't vote for her uneducated, hateful party.
Look into the local school board elections and municipal elections that help decide on school policies and age restrictions. To help vote against a bill brought up that you think is bogus. Email your local federal&provincial representatives about concerns call their offices they document all these
This is the key. And have conversations with those people on the right you can. You won't change minds immediately, but planting seeds may eventually bring them around.
Absolutely. Which is why criminals in power make sure to cut education, and fill the void with propaganda. They are true evil, and we must - MUST fight back. And insist on education, fairness, and above all: Truth. 🙏
Thank you Katie for this information, I really appreciate it. Have a great day.
We've got a different issue in Ontario - apathy. The vast majority of us stay home on election day for Premier. Choosing an actual Liberal to lead the party instead of Doug Ford in a red jacket might help, too... www.tvo.org/article/we-g...
Not to praise Ontario, which is a disappointment politically, but only to show how low Alberta can go.
Literally less than 25 percent of eligible voters voted for our big, Shiny Boy, and people keep just not showing up at the polls because they're like no way we could change this. It's pathetic.
Oh let lil pp lose for a little while 😭🤭
We do see a problem. The book thing is minor compared to the mosaic of ideological crap we see most days. 2 more years
