He actually thinks that or only says that to keep his MAGA base supporting him? Granted, he *may* be that stupid but somehow it seems to me he plays on the (wilfully) stupidity of his supporters. Standard fare for most cult leaders, actually.

I think he's thought that over time. I know MAGA's been around a while too, but I thought I've read that he's never understood tariffs. From 2020, I'll look for something earlier than this: www.brookings.edu/articles/did...
