A good idea for a movie made narratively muddy for fear of offending its audience. They should have just gone for it.

They did though. I agree Garland’s comments on the publicity tour could be construed that way, perhaps intentional misdirection on his part. Because it was not subtle, especially the Plemons and Offerman characters. I think the movie had great set pieces with some groan inducing dialogue at times.

Plemmons was terrifyingly realistic.

Yeah I wanted to read Trump into Offerman's character and I think Offerman wanted to put him there. And they made the troops loyal to him southern-accented, so kinda. But how would Texas have wound up allied with California? (Oil? There were ways to get plausible enough with some exposition.)

Yeah I get people were mad about that but I think the movie didn’t want to get bogged down in those logistical details. I was fine with “war is hell, this will not be pretty, no need to know why it started” in this case. (One thought I had with the TX/CA alliance was maybe military bases?)
