How exactly were the proven disasters? Every country that made the transition to socialism saw a huge improvement to people's material conditions from literacy rates, to home ownership, to caloric intake. The only thing that proved to be disastrous was CIA backed regime change.
And before you jump to it, while the death toll of communism is incredibly inflated from US propaganda (Most notably the Black Book of Communism which all but one of it's authors admitted they were just making shit up), Stalin's period of the Soviet Union was an embarrassment in many ways.
