well, i don't think those fountains are a main contributer to water scarcity. It's always the same water that flows there, only the small parts that evaporate need to be replaced.

It’s the same water…until it evaporates into the 120 degree desert sky and needs to be replaced with new water.
That's for sure correct, but i do not knew how much that really is. The amount of water that evaporates is mainly dependent from surface area and wind speed while evaporation cools the water itself, which then again limits the amount of evaporation. But i do not knew how much they really need.
Hm, i seartched for it and found numbers ranging from 1% to 5% per day. But that are very unspecific calclculations, coming from pond and fountain manufactorers. But as a assumption, that would mean roughly about 3times the whole pool water per year.
