I feel like nobody needs to be told that Red Staters are slavering for the opportunity to be paid to arm up & shoot Blue Staters, because that's what they've been saying loudly & clearly since the 90s.

The one thing we have going for us is the military (NG especially) are way more diverse than say during the days of Kent State. That isn’t to say there aren’t true believers amongst the Guard but it isn’t all bubba and his buddies dodging the Vietnam draft by hiding in the Guard either.

What gives me hope is a lot of the people in the military aren’t rabid fascists. At least not yet. Very very few of these people signed up to shoot fellow Americans. Most of the battalion level officers are going to be GWOT vets and are pragmatic rational people.

I'm sure I'm not the only person who was way too online on Usenet* & regularly ran into RW Americans who 'joked' about "Liberal Hunting Licenses" with "no bag limits". * Usenet WAS "social media" from the mid 90s until the mid 2000s.
