The AARP has been awfully quiet. What’s going on there?

Peg I care, do you? 💙 @blueskypeg.bsky.social

Actually, they’re not. They are very subtle, but there are signs that they spin right. Done with them, too.

it should be issue #1 on their front page, not hair color. www.aarp.org scroll down for their contact congress link, action.aarp.org/secure/tell-...

I have received a couple of notifications from AARP, one with a link to voice protest. action.aarp.org/secure/socia...

It sounds like they’re trying not to piss off their Republican members.

Aarp makes massive $$$ on Medicare advantage. Medicare advan was devised to destroy Medicare & privatize. Aarp will never really support seniors financially. Join them for travel benefits - not public policy advocacy.

Yep. Just another scam aimed at seniors. Vulnerable people have vultures circling around them.

I know I’m not renewing membership if they don’t speak out against this administration. There are no “two sides to the story”

I’m mad too. But as a 501(c)4 nonprofit there are rules: They can lobby for and against specific laws and policies —and they do, effectively. But they must stay nonpartisan. (I used to run a 501(c)3 and a 501(c)6 and was always a bit confused about the rules, but that’s why we have lawyers.)

But when W wanted to privatize SS, the AARP was in the fight. You could argue that it’s not partisan, but issue based

Exactly. A (c)4 lobbies for the “general welfare” of its members. (And of course it used to be that supporting SS was noncontroversial and nonpartisan)

Where do churches fall in this structure? A lot of them went pro trump even though they're non-profits. Asking because you seem well-versed on this.

Excellent question: All 501(c)3s including churches are supposed to avoid partisan political activity, but many skirt or outright break the law. Here’s an interesting story about it from 2 yrs ago (both good sources): www.texastribune.org/2022/10/30/j...

Thank you. It's so infuriating how they say God told them this or that to get their followers to do their bidding 🤬
