Today in Black History: On Aug. 30, 1983, Guion S. Bluford (Guy Buford) became the first Black American to travel into space when the space shuttle Challenger lifted off from Cape Canaveral on its third mission. He was accepted in the astronaut program in 1979 and flew three more missions.

I have a friend, Robert Curbeam, who I met in high school who was also on the shuttle Challenger. We went on a high tour at Va Tech & dated briefly. We lost touch for years. Then one day I saw his picture as one of the Black astronauts who went up in the Challenger. He was a late admit to Naval
Academy, so I didn't even know he went to school there. We've since been in touch a few times. He's from Baltimore. Great guy.

And he's the nephew of pioneering Black journalist Lucile Bluford, who in 1939 sued to desegregate the University of Missouri School of Journalism and went on to become publisher of The Kansas City Call.
