Internet Lore notwithstanding, that game was dire. It was an extremely disappointing rental and I feel for anyone that actually bought it :)

I blame Lex Luthor
I don’t remember it being that bad, but I rented it, played for an hour and took it right back, so maybe I should’ve stuck with it haha
OMG yes 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤌 Sorry not sorry your suffering through this awful game but.... I love to hear how it's going lol
Check out the beta for it. It had EVERYTHING.
WB was basically out to destroy it from day one, it's kinda crazy.
It's also ironic that despite being considered one of the worst games ever made it was a financial success. Sold 500,000 copies!
Yeah man that game is…not good hahaha. I don’t know how it got released either. I remember being very disappointed with it as a kid.
Big Rigs was unfinished shovel ware that was a relatively low profile... This is... Supposedly... finished and bug free, and high profile. That's why I take this as being a "worse" game than big rigs - it's got farther to fall, more to fail at, and more people letting it fall.
... and started bitching at the kid on the way out. Thats my only Superman 64 memory. 😅
A friend of mine worked at a game store when this was released. A kid came in wanting it and he told the kid to get something else. The kid insisted and bought it. The Next day the kids mom came in bitching wanting to know why he let her kid buy this horrible game. He said he warned him...
If you need a guest for the show or an ear to vent to, I have extensive thoughts on Superman 64.........and not all negative 🙂
This game is the ONLY time I have EVER taken advantage of GameStop’s return policy. Bought it used, took it home and tried it for 2-3 hours with about 5 of my friends, and NONE of us could get through the first level for the controls. Fucking terrible. Took it back that evening.
I eventually beat the first level, only to get thrown into the second level which gives you no explanation and only a few seconds to complete it. I failed and got kicked back to the first level again. You might the right choice in returning it.
This may have actually been the catalyst for returning it. Second level gave you 9 seconds or something like that? I remember the store clerk was surprised to see me again and I told him the reason for return was that it’s unplayable. He thought I meant “broken” when I really meant BROKEN!
I've seen enough of it to never even want to go near it, let alone play it.
It's maddening.
"If you want to play Goldeneye, play Goldeneye. If you want to play Superman 64, PLAY GOLDENEYE." Literally a conversation I had with a friend.
Superman 64 was probably the first, real, "bad" game I ever played. When I was younger, I used to think if a game wasn't fun; it wasn't the game's fault, it was mine. Because I wasn't good enough of a gamer to be having fun because video games are supposed be just fun!
Honestly, best game of all time
I think part of the reason why we get games like SM64 is that no one really knows how to approach making a proper Superman game. His character is too OP.
There was a game that Jacksepticeye played years ago I believe was called Megaton Rainfall that really felt like a Superman game. You went around the planet flying in first person and fighting alien invasions but you could fly anywhere in the galaxy
Im gonna have to check it out. That sounds dope.
Superman Returns had the neat idea of giving the city a health bar instead of Superman.
I've never played that one, but I like that idea alot.
Even the demo is so terrible that the people who tested the games just stopped playing.
Its a superhero Silent Hill where thr Horror is the gameplay ! What more could you want😅🤣
Just reminded me of the AVGN video on this youtu.be/1dJXgJ1c4vY?...
I finally beat it last year. It was awesome! 🦸
Good thing I kept the receipt and brought this travesty back to the store and got my money back.
@ross.tweets.games If the aliens turn out to be mean, maybe we could give them this one and send them on their way so they never bother us again? 🤔
That can be arranged 🛸
Dude, it’s insane how bad it is😂 genuinely earned its reputation. Just a horrendous game.
I have childhood memories of playing this game. Not good memories but still 😂
I have this in my collection. The store I use to haunt the owner loved to mess with me. I’d be in his store buying a nice game from my buylist to stream later. He’d say streaming still? Great I have a game for you. It was always crap. How I got this game and Sonic ‘06 in my collection.
So it's not your GoTY then Patrick
Still the second worst game all time. The First is still ET
Couldn't agree more Supes 64 fought to get made with active resistance while ET...... They devs resisted making it up until like the last week lol ET is the worst but Supes 64 is a close second for different reasons
ET is better. I played it as a kid & didn't think it was awful, just really weird. Superman 64 is the most unfun video game I've ever played. It feels terrible to control & has the worst objectives in a game that I can think of. Getting past the 1st level will test your patience.
Ah, the plight of the 90s licensed game
Dude, this one goes so far beyond what typically constitutes a half baked licensed game from the 90s. I'd probably call it the worst video game I've ever played.
Oh I know! I've gone down many a SM64 rabbit hole on youtube in the past decades 😂
Those rings. Those damn rings.
I reviewed this game years ago & stand by what I said. The rings everyone bitched about? Those were the best part of the game! They were terrible, but the rest of the game was far worse!
The rescue missions often make the rings feel like pretty decent gameplay
Sonic wouldn't even...
And follow-up question: how did the actually decent Playstation version NOT get released? youtu.be/Rru2g2uRkUw?...
You should play the prototype it’s a better game then the realized version.
i remember the first time i saw a gameplay video that showed WHY this game has the reputation it does and I'm just....mind blown that anybody thought this was a good idea
Without a doubt the worst game I have ever played.
The more I research, the less I blame developers and the more I blame WB and DC back then. I have A LOT to say on the podcast about this...
I've come to learn that a lot of the time, it's the publishers that tend to screw over the devs.
Funny how things never change. We still can blame WB for all their bad choices
@sqiddwr.bsky.social
Yes I know I rented this as a small child. Big mistake lmao.
I have this game in my own collection, and yeah. This game is rather infamous as both a Superman game and a licensed game for a reason
Yay SuperPilotsWings 64! now with 160% more rings! 🤣
I remember renting this and still regret it. And I was like 14 and would play anything to keep from going outside and this game forced me to go outside to wash away its stink haha. If more games were released like this, I would never worry about making my go outside haha.
A Superman game getting the Spiderman games treatment would be incredible.
It always felt like a game that was specifically designed to make me feel stupid. I thought maybe I was missing something that the instruction book might've told me, since I only rented it the once. I thought maybe I was just a kid bad at playing the N64. But nah, it was just garbage.
I wrote a review of Superman 64.... a positive one: djcube.co.uk/superman-the... Honestly, I'll take "ambitious but broken" more than "immensely dull". I'd choose to play this over Shadow of Apokolips.
I ugly laughed
Retro no!! Playing that game is considered self abuse!!! :P
I bet this game was secretly funded by Lex Luthor...
I always thought if I could find Superman 64 for 10 dollars or less, I would get it, but I haven't seen it for that cheap 😆
I’ve always wanted to actually pick up and play this shitter 😂
Jake, I say this with love... Yes.... do it...
Tough love huh
I just want to see you post about it after you experience it.
My exposure to it was AVGN back in 2010 LOL and that's all I feel I need to see
If you haven't already, I highly recommend checking out @giantbomb.bsky.social play through on their aptly titled show, Blight Club. Never played it, but woof, watching their play through made it apparent how awful it was.
I have stories to tell on the show, luckily. I rented this game in 1999 and remember that weekend VERY well.
I was a member on a retro game forum years ago. Someone came up with the idea that we would collectively finish every n64 game. Guess who decided to take one for the team and beat Superman 64? That game is just an absolute mess. And then there’s the final level…🤬
I applaud your sacrifice whoever your colleagues were on that mission could not possibly have been able to thank you enough for such valiance. I myself have actually blacked out every memory of kiosks, rentals, and any other time i was foolish enough to play that for whatever reason.
They pretty much let me pick whatever games I wanted off the list after that. At least I could follow up that train wreck of a game with good stuff like Ocarina of Time, Banjo Kazooie, and Perfect Dark.
Oh God... bad memories unlocked. Thanks for THAT
If your recommending bad games in your podcast then I have the suggestion for you
I wish there was a fan game that showed off what a good version of Superman 64 would look like.
A real shame, given that Superman TAS was such an awesome series.
And the "Best" Superman game is a still "Superman Returns" (Xbox360) It's can not be THAT freaking hard to make a good Superman game!
I hear you. Superman for the Atari 2600 was a very good game for its time.
There is an unreleased PS1 version that was basically finished and is available online if you know where to look. It is significantly better.
Just saw it and wow the reason it wasint released was DUMB! They should have realized the N64 game was a boring slog and canceled the that instead! That games failure literally ruined the better game! I'm sure this wouldn't have been just as loved as the Spider-Man game. youtu.be/6AULYN6QNZM?...
"WOULD HAVE been just as loved as the spider-man game" is what I meant to put.
Maybe this was the apex point where we entered the bizarro world based on the current timeline?!
