Stupid, in my opinion. Those drivers are employees disguised as contractors. Lyft and Uber should be paying all the payroll taxes and insurance for them, as well as guaranteeing they make minimum wage. If they can't afford to do that, then it is not a viable business model.
But they aren't employees. They choose whether or not to pick up a ride. They are not ordered to. They agree to do it for the price stated. There is nothing they are doing that qualifies them as employees. They decide what car they use. It was never meant to be a job or a career.

Wrong and Wrong. You shouldn’t speak to things you don’t know. The car has to a newer model above 2013 and a four door, so there’s that. If you were a gig worker you’d know that. Some drivers only have this as income. So it is a job. Period !
Having this as your sole income doesn't magically make this a traditional job. Each ride is a contract you can accept or decline, and you can work anytime you want. That isn't how a regular job works.
And you have to drive all day just to make ends meet , because Uber takes 60% of their wage.
And, it's not a wage. It's a fee. Big difference.
They agree to that when they sign on. They choose to drive because they have flexibility and are their own bosses. Uber is not their boss.
But i do know. It's the drivers choice to make it their sole source of income. Gigs aren't designed to be full time employment. It's their choice how much they drive. It's their choice what car they drive. They are not employees. They sign on to drive and collect passengers via the app.
Then why do they need a union?
Wanting one and needing one are 2 different things. I belong to a union that serves me well. I don't think gig works are employees and I don't think they need a union.
