Feels like a pretty significant problem with comparing biological systems to say LLMs is that we don’t have any good and firm conceptions of how any of these work! Also that someone claiming that this or that example Obviously isn’t real intelligence or whatnot probably is over their head.
An interesting one! I hadn't heard this kind of "marker" approach before. And yes indeed it's hard to make exclusive claims when we really don't know even enough about ourselves
My point, distilled to a sentence, is this: when AI techbros (and LLM “enthusiasts”) assign intelligence / consciousness to LLMs, they are practicing an especially virulent and self-deceptive form of reductionism.
I get the point! Of course, it is itself a question, that how is e.g. intelligence reductible, if it is at all. Nevertheless, actual complex philosophical questions are rarely compatible with shallow internet techbro hype
