tbh I was more pessimistic, even if I didn't think Russia would manage to take all of Ukraine, I expected it to take Kyiv and the government to have to evacuate e.g. to Lviv and the frontline to end up being way west of where it is.

It was, apparently, a near run thing, but the citizen soldiers of Kyiv saved the capital, as documented here by the WSJ, 🎁:

yeah, and the president and government staying in the capital and not evacuating (even if it was risky as fuck) was probably decisive for the morale
I'd have run away but I never said I wasn't a coward
and while the government in, say, Lviv, would still be the legitimate one, Russia setting up a puppet regime in Kyiv would make the international position more precarious, with Russia-friendly countries (like possibly even Hungary) recognizing that one
I'm glad I was wrong and tbh if the government had evacuated then Kyiv probably would have fallen
