PSA: There’s a difference between wearing a mask or respirator & wearing a gaiter or face covering to disguise identity. It’s important to discern & communicate this nuance because if you don’t, you might encourage elected officials to ban masks for everyone, which would be a public health disaster.

I really don't think the difference matters. If we allow that gaiters are a dangerous identity concealer the same reasoning will be applied to medical masks that similarly cover skin. How about we just use the word "unidentified" - since what we really want the right to is a name, not a nose-bridge.
yes, I hate the burden *always* falls on ppl trying to protect their and others' health, BUT -- we must start using the "R" word! and calling respirators what they are: RESPIRATORS. Language like "masks", "face-coverings" prevent airborne transmission isn't just imprecise. it predictably backfires.

The emphasis should be on names and badge numbers, like normal police; their are legitimate reasons to have respirators, but there’s no legitimate reason to have unidentified officers grabbing people off the street without due process

Prohibiting masking isn't good! It has and will continue to be a way to target disabled people. Require badges and clear identification on uniforms.

Californian Democratic lawmakers specify in their bill “non-medical masks” being banned for law enforcement. So, technically, ICE could still wear procedure masks or N95s, I guess 🤷🏻♀️
