First, @eff.org filed a blockbuster FOIA request that uncovered how Home Depot and Lowe's are cooperating with cops. Then, @404media.bsky.social made the story free thanks to their commitment to dropping paywalls for FOIA-based reporting. Read the whole story below.

Watch this PSA from our board member @johncusack.bsky.social: Democracy is under attack — and paywalls shouldn’t stand in the way of accessing vital public records. News outlets, it’s time to drop the paywalls for FOIA-based reporting. @wired.com did it. @404media.co did it. Now, it’s your turn.

A workaround is accessing the articles via the public library. In the words of Arthur, having fun isn't hard if you've got a library card! 🤓📰🗞

This holds true for a lot of important news stories... people will go to whoever gives them the news for free... the educated or those who wish to be educated will pay for it.... But then people need to be paid for reporting... yeah, if only there was a way to balance the two with ads...

What do Lowe’s and Home Depot gain from giving full access to the police beyond a single incident? Having to not fill out a form later? Just seems kind of wild to grant anybody that kind of open ended access to anything for free.
