The quislings at Paul Weiss didn't even try to fight it, just instantly rolled over and committed to around 20,000 to 40,000 hours (given their current rates) of free legal services to advance incompetence, corruption, bigotry, and fascism.

So I know SCOTUS ruled that bribes -- I mean, "tips" -- are ok. Where do they stand on extortion?
Those that work at this firm should resign in protest.
Don't comply in advance
And their own demise?
That's a hell of a lot of hours to give free crappy legal services if they wanted to.
This is beyond obscene.
And who will be doing those pro bono hours? The associates. Will they all leave in droves? I would think so - because they had no say in this.
As an aside, how embarrassing. Who’d want to be an associate at a firm where the lawyers are (now) known to be such weaklings?
A democracy cannot exist with a billionaire class; the ungodly concentration of wealth erodes democratic principles. What are your thoughts?
What must Trump be threatening he'll do, or what is he offering them, that even with people knowing about all the other people thrown under the bus like Michael Cohen, Guliani, Sydney Powell, Weisselberg, they go along anyway? Scary that they think there will be no more justice to worry about?
For shame, Paul Wiss et al! I saw your lost morality running down the street toward the Hamptons. Better go catch it.
This decision will prove to be detrimental to their own firm. Enabling is not an option‼️🤬 🍊 Traitor must not be aided to advance the authoritarianism ✔️
Just a cool 10-20 billable years of work.
Any lawyer who works pro bono for the Trump administration deserves whatever horrors they will receive in return by the goddess Karma.
Absolutely disgusting. No wonder people hate lawyers.
Basicallly on a free retainer and all they’ll be is MAGA Esq.
As a sophisticated consumer of litigation services (insurance claims handler) I'd bake into my evaluation of them that they *will* surrender work product when demanded by the government. They've made that their brand, so what good are they?
Any Wikipedia editors out there? Karp’s and Paul Weiss’s pages should be getting updated in real time.
Jesus wept
I hope all those litigation associates are looking forward to defending the illegal deportations of Venezuelan refugees to El Salvador prisons. If people didn't already hate lawyers this would be the final nail in that coffin.
They're like Lando on Bespin. And yes, the "deal" will get worse and worse.
Sick wealthy unethical law firm. Paying a president to get off their back is flagrant quid pro quo, blackmail, extortion. I'm watching to see how this plays out and hoping legal challenges in the courts result and a lot of the Paul Weiss clients change to other firms for ethics and in protest.
🤬🤬🤬
No words can convey the level of contempt I feel for this firm’s leadership.
There is wrongdoing all right. It's the cowardly lawyers rolling over for the Rump.
WTAF? Why?!
All their clients with consciences should quit the firm immediately. Their only fiduciary duty is to themselves.
The epitome of everything wrong with America today. The victory of greed, cowardice and fascism.
Hitler needed a free law firm.
Maybe she should say something. www.paulweiss.com/professional...
What are they threatening people with? I cannot imagine people not standing up.
And here I thought I had already reached my maximum level of disgust! Broke right through that ceiling! 😡
Traitors
And they're expecting me to fight while the people who have the resources and access capitulate. I'm just so done with everyone and everything right now.
It does kinda feel like everyone with actual power to fight back is giving up without a fight and joining him and then pointing to the rest of us with our low paying hourly jobs, zero connections, and lack of funds saying “hey! Go protest and stop this or it’s your own fault!”
This is DISGUSTING!
That they offer legal services is an indictment of the firm. Remember, "Nobody competent will work for him, because he doesn't listen, and he doesn't pay."
Don’t call it a comeback It’s a shakedown
Is it not an option for them to take on Trump's cases and just fucking phone it in so they lose every time? Aw shucks, we lost another one.
I very much doubt it will happen: genuine cowardice and compliance are waaay more likely. But it's true there were people who resisted the Nazis and Communists this way. It'd make a great story one day if they were taking the very public L and were actually motivated by a commitment to sabotage.
It's more a question of what would stop them from doing that, I don't have much faith they'll do it because people like this are just... not very good at that sort of thing generally.
No words…beneath contempt. These are officers of the court?
I'm starting to think that perhaps lawyers aren't the most principled of professions
Straight up extortion.
Friggin wussies. SO much for fighting for what is RIGHT! Disgusting.
I see Quisling arouse spontaneously in other minds as well. I would hope everyone will use it. Paul Weiss & Quisling has a nice ring to it.
Here’s the Weiss site, including staff, contact, etc…. www.paulweiss.com
Who's going to provide this pro bono work, nazi lawyers? Pro bono attorneys are as general rule the furthest from being nazis. If you were a lawyer, would you want your resume to announce that you contributed free legal services in furtherance of Trumpism? No, not this attorney.
Like all attorneys, the attorneys at Paul Weiss took an oath to uphold the Constitution. These spineless slugs caved to preserve their equity partner profits. They are an embarrassment to the legal profession. If I worked there, they would have received my resignation first thing this morning.
Paul Weiss is disgusting.
How can they hold their heads up high any longer. A shocking development. All the comforts and blandishments of Big Law practice has rotted away their sense of morality.
Anyone who thought big law wouldn't capitulate doesn't know lawyers. Trump's actions against them are illegal but Trump's leverage will hurt their profitability. The lawyers who do represent plaintiffs in cases against the government are getting paid -- and courageous.
Disbar them.
JFC!
Oh I bet they’ll put their very best on these projects too
"given their current rates"... I feel like you're setting up a scenario in which a) they start doing their pro bono work for Trump, b) their clientele flees, then c) Trump demands they do more pro bono work because their rate fell off a cliff when they lost their clients.
Foul and disgusting. May they all rot in the hell they have made for themselves.
Clients should flee.
They didn’t even put up a fight. Why would anyone want them to represent now ?
That is the most galling, obscene part. Committing pro bono hours to support the admin’s policies?🤢 good god. Close your doors.
Let's generously give every lawyer at Paul Weiss 80 hours a year of pro bono, which is higher than what they report. That still turns into something like 100-125 lawyers who, over the next four years, must commit *all* of their pro bono time to Trumpism. A tenth of the firm. Time to lateral!
What attorney would want to sign their name to the arguments that the administration is making to further their agenda?
Pro bono time to represent the mafia. No one else should hire them because you can’t trust them not to sell you out.
I never want to hear another conservative say the reason we can't have universal healthcare is bc it's wrong for ppl to have to work for free (which is nonsense itself anyway) bc apparently they're fine with that actually
~3% of their time/year is “generous”?!
How does it even work that a private law firm is going to give an administration free legal work? Is that even a thing? Are they going to be filling in for DOJ or will it be more like his cronies get to harrass people they don't like pro bono?
Governmental legal departments regularly contract with outside firms to do work for them. Someone better versed could speak more on this, but I don’t think they would be the ones trying any cases in court, but there’s a lot of work that happens outside the confines of the courtroom
I'm honestly floored by this. I really assumed that the white shoe law firms would go to war. They've got a stable full of lawyers from the top schools, the Trump Admins lawyers went to clown colleges. I was looking forward to the carnage (and disbarrments).
Yes. And what they most often do is pro bono on 1983 civil rights violations most normally prisons: assaults, rapes, sentence extension. Or admin hearings EEO on employment. Now they won’t. Or will on the other side. Which hurts victims and also lets govt cut full time attorneys.
This could be the firm’s undoing
If so, well deserved.
#ETTD
Maybe it’ll all be 1st year associates that their clients won’t pay for anyway. Imagine being one of those folks that had a rescinded government offer it was let go in the purges only to land at PW and learn this.
Does the pro bono work also create conflicts of interest?
It certainly will! But I suspect Paul Weiss will take the courageous stand of simply not telling its paying clients "we are adverse to you on behalf of the Trump administration."
LOLOLOLOLOL the chumps at Paul Weiss got played even harder than it appeared, they agreed to a statement and then Trump changed it and published it. He's going to keep doing this the entire time through that full "$40 million." Then demand more. And Paul Weiss deserves every bit of it.
It’s like they didn’t think Trump would change an agreement, make his version public, and force people to try and say “that’s was not the agreement”. We see Trump do that all the time.
Wow. Can’t win, for losing
This is somehow even worse. So, weak, cowardly, AND naive? What exactly are they purporting to offer clients, exactly?
Oh, seeing Akiva already out there, I expect that’s nothing to worry about as their best people gonna be too busy fending off headhunters to talk to clients.
www.amazon.com/Vichy-Regime...
Nice. I have a feeling this in one of many copies Paul Weiss will be receiving. They can hand them out as parting gifts to all the lawyers who quit after this nightmare.
Pathetic cowering
How anybody with enough brains to use a drinking straw could believe a goddamned thing Donald Trump told them is beyond me. Paul Weiss is just one more clown car in the vast motorcade of Trump Humiliation.
Should have learned from Star Wars. George Lucas tried to warn us all
When you sit at a table of 11 Nazis, you're sitting at a table of 12 Nazis. Zero empathy here. Fuck them all.
I suspect the $40 million in “pro bono” work that Donald expects to receive from Paul Weiss won’t in fact constitute “pro bono work” that satisfies Paul Weiss’ own definition of pro bono, but rather $40 million of free legal work to support Donald’s personal interests
100% percent correct.
I was thinking they may take on some petty thief at a rate of $40 million/hour.
😭
Weiss just ate the chocolate on his pillow at the new jail cell, happily.
Why would they trust a lying grifter.. you can’t be that stupid
What did they expect when “negotiating” with a known liar and criminal felon?
Making a deal like this with people whose public persona is rooted in breaking agreements whenever it suits them seems ill-advised. Frankly, it is not the kind of strategic insight I would be looking for when hiring a law firm.
Paul, Weiss will forever have such a vichy smell after karping their nevilles in trumpy quisling.
James Joyce couldn't have said better. Hats off to you.
Seems a really dumb move as they will lose D clients out of the gate. And as Trump falls into the 30's of approval ratings ( where he is headed), they'll look like total losers to most if US while defending his corrupt admin
Hope they loose all their clients after this and go bankrupt
Just disgusting.
Yup, they gave him a little so now he'll take everything. 40 million? He'll burn through that by the end of summer and still demand that they work for him for free or he'll just reissue the executive order. They just announced their weakness to everyone.
I think normal humans may not understand that the people who run BigLaw firms aren’t selected for their backbone. They are weak and dominate over weaker people by the fact that those other people are weaker, not by being strong themselves.
They are supposedly smart lawyers but I still have to question their IQ. They didn’t expect him to do that???
"lol. lmao", said the Scorpion.
this is one of those "offering a concession just makes you a target for more concessions" things and you should not so much as give that man a stick of gum.
🎯
it is bewildering to me that people who seem otherwise intelligent can't figure this out
There are SO SO many lessons out there to show us that deciding to comply with Trump never, ever ends well for you.
Why am I not surprised?
It boggles the mind that people CONTINUE TO THIS DAY to engage with these folks and expect them to not cheat.
Who would hire lawyers that both caved and got played that easily? Not a type of lawyering I would want to see on my behalf. Chumps.
Is that good dealmaking? Giving the other side the pen on the press release?
I'll answer if you give me your login and PW
#ETTD
I would rather call Saul
I thought attorneys were supposed to be smart. Do business with a criminal, expect to be screwed.
Man incredible Unacceptable … hope they have a good lawyer.
🤣
Anyone want these chumps who just got rolled in public to represent their interests? Anyone? FAFO
Paul Weiss may deserve every bit of it, but we don't.
It's almost like making deals with bad-faith corrupt serial deal-breakers does not necessarily work the way you would want it to work, golly gosh.
Has anyone heard reports of any resignations from the firm?
Brad Karp making a statement: youtu.be/rIy_RXX_VLE?...
Sniveling, pathetic cowards.
And that's gonna be the firm you want negotiating your next mutli-billion M&A deal?
Of course, this is contrary to various parts of the ethical canons for the profession.
Wait, Trump lied? No way!
Hope Paul Weiss is looking forward to this... because he will expect this from them. bsky.app/profile/josh...
He is going to make them walk into a court and risk sanctions like the ones in the immigration cases or the USAID Case or any of a dozen other cases...
It’s a protection racket
The Pomerantz stuff, specifically, felt like something they wouldn’t have agreed to
Hard to imagine being this wealthy and this big of a coward
Imagine making a public declaration of your blackmail deal. I've seen plenty about the victim but little blame laid at the feet of the perpetrator: Mafia Don. He is undoing the justice system for his own gain. He made himself judge and published his ruling and sentencing for the world to see.
Anyone that trusts Trump to keep his word on anything is delusional!
Wow
@mark-carney.bsky.social Could find this to be useful knowledge of potential future behaviours of Trump Commander & Thief Of USA
Degrading yourself for power and approval just leads to your "benefactor" degrading you further? Huh
Wow - I would think they would lose more clients over this than they would have by standing up to Trump. PW - We've got an offer of settlement - we think you should sign Client - ok - what are the terms? PW - They will let us know after you sign it Client - uh PW- here's our bill🤡
And was the wrongdoing again?
Correct if I’m wrong, but wasn’t the Rifkind in Paul Weiss etc. one of the prosecutors in the Nuremberg trials? My how times change.
And would a corporate client really feel confident in a law firm that just negotiated a 40 million settlement for no good cause?
Just one more example of how multiple death threats against people and their families get results.
Why is one of their partners on the committee to select Democrat judges? bsky.app/profile/nort...
If everyone is going to roll over and agree, they need to take the Mel Brooks method where you just agree to whatever they say and then lose the notes immediately. Just agree and do nothing.
The term "Quislings" needs to make a comeback in a big way. We are surrounded by so many of them, and they need to be shamed back into their hidey holes.
Absolutely disgusting.
Stupidest decision ever. Who the hell would look for representation from a law firm that capitulated (rapidly) to a fucking fascist moron, AKA Mr. First Felon?
Dewey Cheatem & Howe are looking for co-counsel?
I don’t think they will find a legal basis to go after Jack Smith. There are not alternative laws for prosecutors, just like there are no “alternative facts”.
And there is no legal basis to go after Jenner and Block (or Paul Weiss, for that matter) It is clearly illegal to bar their lawyers from federal buildings so they can’t do their jobs. No judge is going to uphold that. And what shyster lawyer can Trump find to go up against Jenner and Block?
So the government can’t make a soldier sleep in your house, but they can make law firms prosecute you?
🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
Damn, stay away from this Vichy law firm!
Quislings is exactly the word.
I'm pro-Bono giving any lawyers of integrity 72 hours (the weekend) to resign or lose said integrity.
I hope this firm is roundly rejected by the legal community, but I fear they are only leading the way for other firms.
It's amusing that they think this will keep them safe. There is no safe space now and keeping one's head down won't help you
A successful shake down
I’d love to be a fly on the wall where these about turns take place.
