Checking in on X, they still have no idea how anything works, even basic stuff in their lives like car insurance. No, the insurer doesn't buy a new Tesla, they give you a check for replacement value, which on used Teslas is falling at 2x the rate of other used cars. 😎 www.cnn.com/2025/03/20/b...

Which means the check from the insurance provider is way less than it would normally be. Punishing individuals who almost certainly despise Musk right now, not punishing Musk. But if people destroy Musk's inventory of cars, it actually rewards Musk as he gets money for a car he did not have to sell

Rich people buy policies with riders that do in fact get them a new car. It’s called New Car Replacement rider for most carriers that offer it. Easiest sale a car insurance agent can make: “one last thing, rich person, if your car is totaled do you want a used car as a replacement?”

just realized that this is exactly like a campaign malm describes in “how to blow up a pipeline”: it’s becoming so inconvenient to own a tesla that it’s easier to just get rid of it, esp bc more ppl prob bought a tesla to signal status/virtue, not out of an ideological commitment to musk

Fun car insurance fact I learned not too long ago. If a deer and car bump into each other. Insurance will pay up to 75% of the car’s value at the moment of impact for repairs. If the cost to repair is more than that value, the car is scrape. So what is the rate of decline for the value of a Tesla?

1) vandalism might be excluded from your policy, if it’s a new Tesla policy it probably is (although otherwise uncommon) 2) you still have to pay the deductible for each occurrence (it’s not like health insurance) and it may be higher for vandalism coverage

AFAIK terrorism is almost always excluded, and since the US government is, at least, threatening to treat the arsons as terrorism, I wouldn't be surprised if insurance companies started doing the same.

Not to mention insurance companies tend to be very “what were you wearing” about TP liability, they will require a police report, the report has to match your claim, and meanwhile you get to drive around with a dick on your truck. As one does.

Your insurance costs will also go up if the thing you’re insuring is considered risky! Just like homes in hurricane- or fire-prone areas, Teslas (both individually and on the lots) will eventually be uninsurable if the insurance companies keep having to pay out for them!
