Words/phrases Democrats should never use: * bipartisan * my Republican friends * real, valid, legitimate, serious, important (to describe issue raised by Republicans) * yea (when voting on Republican bills) * distraction (to describe bad thing Republicans did) * woke (in derogatory sense)

CoastersPaul @coasterspaul.bsky.social

I'd like to think that! And I do think voters want stuff to happen and don't really care if legislation is bipartisan. But polls and focus groups kept showing they like how "bipartisan" sounds in theory. Do they vote that way, not really?, and perhaps it's time to abandon it, but that's why.

aug 24, 2025, 5:44 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
Dalillama @dali-llama.bsky.social

As presented by polls and focusing groups, the question is always framed as "do you want X to work bipartisanly to do [good thing]?" People who want [good thing] say "Fine, whatever, if that's how we get [good thing]", and that's framed as "Polls show people want bipartisanship".

I'm torn about "distraction" being a problem. I don't think it should be the sole descriptor of bad actions by the administration. But the admin often purposefully times bad actions to distract. (Raiding JB's house right before Epstein files are due at the HoR.) Maybe only use as a verb in passing?

I think very little powerful people do is distraction. There’s a purpose to all of it. If you’re distracting by trying to jail your political opponents, or sending troops into cities, that is not “look over there.” It’s part of the fascist goals.

Sometimes “distraction” means “projection with misdirection.” Sometimes it means “unimportant diversion.” This distinction is critical. Manufactured trans moral panic only ends when we jail those coercing medical interventions upon and raping children because they’re the ones manufacturing it.
