Infrastructure outside of London is seen as more disposable. Infrastructure spend per head in the North vs is a national disgrace and a massive productivity opportunity cost

The North has much better infrastructure than the majority of the rest of England

Try the journeys from Bristol to Exeter or Norwich to Peterborough or Brighton to Southampton or Cambridge to Oxford and then see if that Carlisle to Preston or York to Durham journey is really as bad as you say

The Norwich to Peterborough train eventually crawls on to be the ‘fast train’ between Sheffield, Manchester and Liverpool. All significantly larger conurbations with a total population of around 5 million, with city centres only 40 miles apart. That’s Northern infrastructure.
