"it is our moral obligation to kill the inventors of any form of immortality" not if i get you first, buddy
"it is our moral obligation to kill the inventors of any form of immortality" not if i get you first, buddy
wouldn’t killing the inventor of immortality prove they weren’t immortal, making you a regular old murderer
I think this is the plot of Pathologic
Do I even want to know who's arguing this?
I don't even want to be immortal personally and even I know this is a terrible first premise!! There is functionally no ideological space distancing "immortality is immoral" and "life saving medicine contravenes the natural will of god/gods so we have a moral imperative to prevent and destroy it"
The final form of these guys is the climate doomer goon who in 2018(?) declared that the pursuit of happiness itself was responsible for all our woes.
Genuinely so glad I tapped out of "The Discourse" outside of 'J. C. complains about it' a few years ago. Because I don't know who you're talking about but they sound utterly exhausting Imo all these folx are spiraling towards a doomer singularity if they don't find some kind of hope, community etc
Short term lapses into despair during hard times are inevitable and very human. Existing in a state of despair long term is corrosive to the soul however Thankfully its a kind of corrosion that seems pretty repairable but the further you fall in the harder it is to even *want* to pull yourself out
Anyways very appreciative for those of you still willing to get in the muck with this shit. I fundamentally lack the patience most of the time
That sounds hyperbolic but it's not! (My lack of desire for immortality has a lot to do with a personal fear of the concept of eternity which frankly seems like a terrible place to be basing any kind of moral imperative from! Basing a moral compass only off my fears is fundamentally reactionary!)
I can understand the fear of the concept of eternity. One of the more horrific imaginings of death is 'what if you're still awake and aware, but just trapped in your decaying remnants for eternity'. a zombie. But from a non-supernatural, physics-based set of assumptions, this seems pretty unlikely.
I assume that any actually-real version of immortality that is eventually accomplished will be more of a *potential* immortality, not a guarantee. and as such, if after the first ten thousand years you find that you're really not feelin' it, you can probably just tap out.
the implication being that they need to find a way to kill G-d,
given all the problems we have, that guy losing his shit about immortality, which is not a thing and may never be a thing, seems like a bit of a luxury.
Yes this exactly. Like by all means destroy the immortality ray in the name of your beliefs as long as you help me do Elf Genocide next.
LIke there's plenty to be said (and it's BEEN said) about various rich sci-fi-obsessed tech doofuses who are into this stuff. But the point is that they're stupid and evil because it's NOT REAL, not because it is.
This is exactly the future gaming visionary Jeff Mulbiff warned us about when he created modern strategy games in 1993 and then was silenced by the woke mob
I was like "huh don't remember this thing" so I googled and wouldn't you know it there's only one search result for old Jeff lol Man, you log off here for a second you miss important lore. MY MISTAKE.
Some people said the "immortality" mechanic was unbalanced and ruined the late game.
Yeah I made him up
What in the *fuck* is happening around here when I go touch grass
just a big name prominent leftist On Here going deathist on main, nothing terribly unusual or unexpected
It's genuinely a little disturbing how many Very Online Left People just end up taking a circuitous route to RETVRN
I genuinely think social media cooks brains in a way that makes them primed for regressive behavior. I think that it fosters an inability to critically think, maximizes jumping to conclusions, gamifies trolling and cheap dopamine hits, and generally erodes self-control with instant gratification.
Speaking of the online left, look how they're responding to Obama befriending Mamdani.
At this point I think it's probably on the same scale as booze for brain damage, and worse for addiction.
It’s getting very bad. And with Bluesky having No Algorithm the only logical conclusion it can reach is that the evil algorithm had little to nothing to do with it and People Are Just Like This
I think it's both, but yes, network effects and instant gratification are, IMO, the problem.
I think it has an algorithm, I clicked like on titties and it kept showing me titties
Jumping to immediate conclusions, posting about them in the moment, and then getting a dopamine rush from likes and follows from reactionaries who see what might have been your one-off episode as confirming their priors That is a *scourge* On Here
it's horrific!!!
It mostly registers to me as "these people's ideal life always seems to end up moving backwards to a time when Things Were Simpler."
Also I just gotta say we REALLY gotta get past the ethos of The Rich Remember
I'm starting to think this site is a massive net negative. Just making people crazier and crazier.
Things were not better in the past. Even Gen Z thinks previous generations had it better & we didn’t. Crime was much higher. I lived in LA during the Rodney King riots. The crack epidemic was destroying Black neighborhoods & families.
Black folks had to fight for the right to vote getting beaten & lynched, now kids say they have to be “inspired to vote.” JFK said “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.”
We had a candidate who’d already tried to stage a coup to stay in office after losing an election & was promising to be a dictator on Day 1 if elected again, but people still couldn’t get their lazy asses out to vote for the qualified Black lady.
all conservative ideology is ultimately revanchist; this is the fundamental braking force on my own small-c conservative tendencies
Yeah, I try to keep my tendencies at "conserving" stuff: Don't break things for no reason without trying to understand why they exist, but don't turn Chesterton's Fence into Frost's Fence (unthinking "good fences make good neighbors") or the freaking Berlin Wall.
The whole point of Chesterton's Fence is that it slows you down but it's *vincible*: You can figure out that it's no longer needed, maybe never was but people never questioned it, and it can be demolished after some consideration. It's a check on "move fast and break things" not all forward progress
Yeah, it makes more sense if your only throughline is "people own and make money on tech advancements"
The thing is, RETVRN feels reactionary-coded to me, and never felt right-coded, but the right keeps doing it. A communist doing it feels like the most natural thing in the world (no pun intended)
I am doubling down on my belief that some opinions shouldn't be had by anyone
I found the thread, and the comments are not making me hopeful for the future of the left...
Was that the deathstyle one or something else?
Different one. I just saw it. I do not know who this person is but it’s funny.
That'd be a handy way of testing whether the immortality invention really works
You invented it?
Oh wait is it “in song” we don’t have to kill songwriters
I mean, I feel like that's going to be a hard one.
There can only be one
