Read the labels, not the store signs. If labels states "various proveniences", rest assured that some is from US. Packaged in Canada is also dubious. #BoycottUSA
Sounds like America! Come on Canada. Aren't you better than that?
Of course not. The government at all levels lets the two big grocers do whatever they want.
Action by Gov. is definitely needed.
Just as we boycott American products in the supermarkets, we can boycott all Loblaws and Sobeys and spend our $ elsewhere! π¨π¦πͺ
I've been boycotting loblaws for almost 2yrs
Ya, I saw it again recently: Bartlett pears advertised in No Frills' flyer for $1.99 as 'Product of Western Provinces' but the stickers read USA. The price sign said they were from Argentina. I mentioned it to someone stocking the produce and he said he'd alert the manager. I'll check on it today.
Don't rely on the shelf labels, always look at the actual product labels. Look for 'Product of Canada' foremost, since both the ingredients and the final packaged product come from Canada. 'Made in Canada' means the final product is packaged here, but the ingredients could be from other countries.
I look at every thing that goes in my cart, I have done that for years before this boycott even began. Especially when I have shopped for groceries at any Loblaws company they I find are the biggest culprits of this in my view fraud.
@liberalca.bsky.social Do something. Protect Canadian consumers.
False advertising, I donβt know why this wouldnβt be addressed at the federal level considering we are all trying to get behind buying Canadian. And lying about the product origin is deceptive at best. I have switched my shopping from stores who are either careless or just lying to push US goods.
Okay, this is pretty infuriating. Not only did they neglect to impose the appropriate fine but that fine is 15k per incident. Sobeys can absolutely laugh off a 15K fine and put it down as the cost of doing biz and they still didnt get fined. #nojustice.
If anyone thought that avocado oil came from Canada β¦
The greed...and just like that Sobeys removes its "Product of of" info from its apple displays. Most of these apples are from the U.S. Pisses me off to no end.
Makes me feel better shopping at Costco.....
Canadian shoppers, you know what to do! We don't have to put up with that sh*t.
That's why I always read the sticker on the fruit. A couple of times I've had the reverse experience, where the sign said product of USA but the apple said Canada, but not most of the time.
Agreed β¦ F Sobeys
My small town only had one big, chain grocery store. We just had a small independent, locally owned store open a few weeks ago. It makes me so happy to shop there. π
They get paid from suppliers to face their products, so it's pretty much all about money. Greedy unpatriotic pricks. They should be penalized for deceiving their shoppers, then maybe they'll realize the practice has become too costly when it starts to affect their share values.
It's enough to drive you insane isn't it?
We need to step it up on a few fronts. Shut down magat media. Stop letting grocers lie. Go after Dani. She wants feds money, tighten the rules. While I'm on a rant, mainstream media needs to do a better job explaining tarriffs. Counter tariffs hurt us, they are stupid. 70+ % don't understand that.
I still think we don't need Kentucky bourbon or Florida OJ.

Ffs... Safeway with electronic labels now too. Private sector has failed. They've proven they can't handle the responsibilities and temptations of oligopoly on the market for human sustenance. Time to nationalize the grocery industry across the board.
Based on the potential lack of safety of foods from other countries; we deserve to know where our food comes from.
π― this !! This is the greatest risk now especially since they have nearly eliminated all the βοΈ & βοΈ for their own populace why trust they are selling GOOD products for export
And are electricals or cars etc from the U.S. reliable and safe. Should I worry about the risk of fire or failure?
Exactly! Canada needs to ramp up to keep Canadian population safe.
That really is awful!!!π€¬π€¬π€¬
Greed and corruption are universal qualities of humans, not just Americans.
Why even have a CFIA?
Should be a seven-figure fine.
@charlieangus104.bsky.social @laura-babcock.bsky.social @trueeager.bsky.social It's up to π¨π¦s, we cannot trust any of them. No penalty, disgusting! #BoycottLoblaws #BoycottMetro Do the best you can people!ππͺ
No surprise the Stellarton Mafia arenβt held accountable π
It needs to be accurate.π¨π¦
My oldest daughter got me to download the Shop Canadian app, and when I'm not sure about a product, I scan the bar code to see where it comes from. If it says "This product is not Canadian", I check the location of the company, and if it's somewhere in the US, I put it back on the shelf.
Iβm not surprised. Both Cons and Liberals kowtow to big business in Canada. Typical political cowardice.
The best practice in stopping it is to implement the fine.
It they won't penalize the companies, name, shame, and boycott until they fix their practices.
Traitorous activity
What. The. Fuck.
Having, in the past, tried to complain about some really shady practices by a large π¨π¦ grocery chain, I was informed they are "self policing". Nothing I've seen since then has contradicted that.
As always with capitalism and the "free" market, profits before principles....
By the way, it's the same kind of asshole that would promote "patriotic" racist shit whenever it fit their tax break agenda
You can't trust the government when they are serving the corporations and not the people
Iβll boycott the grocery stores that are misleading and manipulating the marketing. Ffs please publish which stores are doing this.
Sounds like Sobeys and Loblaws, anyone know about canadian superstore?
Canadian superstores, Zehrs, no frills, Valumarts are Loblaws. Like telecom, only a few big ones the rest are subsidiaries of
Thank you!
sounds american-style
π‘
I just...welp, guess it's time to start burning shit down.
Sigh. I guess itβs up to consumers.
To check !!!!!!
Or to boycott them for lying.
Mr. Business is your pal if youβre richβ¦
Different rules for different people
Neoliberal party of Canadaβ¦
Do we have laws in place that would allow them to be fined for this?
While we wait for the Food Inspection Agency to wake up, it's up to us to be vigilant and check all labels, and not trust the signs in the stores. They're just looking to move US products they're stuck with. I use an app called Maple Scan that helps a lot.
WTF Canada, you are better than that. Carney, over to you.
Is misrepresentation for gain, not considered fraud? I thought Canada had fairly strict regulations for labeling, etc. If @mark-carney.bsky.social wants us to buy Canadian, he needs to ensure bad actors aren't preventing us from doing so with their sneaky tactics.
That would involve meaningful enforcement of the law against large corporations.
He wonβt
