I mean, honestly “everyone” was hyperbole. But, somehow, MAGAts and Christofascists co opted the American flag. In many parts of the country, if you see an American flag in front of a house or on a bumper sticker with no context, it’s reasonable to expect that person is a bigot. It’s sad, but true
It’s thinking like this that puts us against each other. I fly the flag to NOT let them win. My neighbors and I all fly our flags bc we won’t let them win. It gives my 90yo neighbors a sense of feeling like they are doing something There are a couple that don’t and interestingly they had Trump signs
The No Kings protest/march I attended was mostly old white conservative veterans and their wives. The veterans are PISSED.
Let’s put it into perspective. I’ve been told to shush by 3 people now, when what I did was state my lived experience. If you had a flag, I had to look for another indicator of what kind of person you are for SAFETY reasons since at least 2015. A little rainbow, a BLM sticker, something.
Yes, there has been a process of reclaiming and I’m glad it’s happening. All I said was that for YEARS it has represented a certain population. Seeing the flag was something that caused anxiety for me in rural WV, and I did state that it was unfortunate. That fear was warranted

I did say it was unfortunate. It’s not something I *want* to do. It’s sort of like the concept of “not all men.” Yes, I recognize that not all people sporting a flag are bigots, but I need some other indicator that me and my kid are safe around you at this point.
