Personally, I believe everyone has basic human rights and should be treated with dignity and respect. However, saying that wasn’t enough and what many of the most vocal advocates wanted was punishment in the here and now for actions of the past. To level an imaginary historical playing field.
History is not make believe, my guy. History is also what sets the stage for the present, therefore inexorably intertwined with the here-and-now.
I don’t disagree - history and context are important. I just think we haven’t yet found a way to punish people in the here and now that hurts those in past that committed the crimes.
