I wrote about the excellent King of the Hill reboot, which offers a hopeful version of Texas - where disagreements happen over a beer in the alley, and where you can be set in your ways without using that as an excuse to be an asshole (or electing one). thebarbedwire.com/2025/08/13/k...

It's not a reboot. It's just more.

Mike Judge is a genius and all of his work from Office Space, Idiocracy, Beavis and Butthead and King Of The Hill reflects that.

Also presents a fantastical world where a white male retiree watched nothing but fox news for however long he was in Saudi Arabia without turning into a ghoul

Mike Judge et al have done a great job of updating the series. It really strikes a nice balance while maintaining relevance for the present times.

“The reboot shows Hank rediscovering Texas in a way that’s as sweet as it is funny. It’s “Ted Lasso” for those of us who tried, and failed, to get into soccer. Hank is the relative you have no-go areas of conversation with, but you still love them.”

No one in modern TV captures the beauty and culture and ridiculousness of TX like Judge. I watched “The Hunting Wives” right before this, which seemed like the writers read an AI summary of Texas and decided they got the gist

I feel like Mike Judge could have easily just become another antiwoke animated comedy guy and instead he just seems like a really sweet dude who’s has no issues evolving with the times. It rocks.

Honestly I think the show is going too deep into trying to rehabilitate center right politics, and is working so hard at having heart it’s missing some of just trying to be funny. Heart is when you see a little decency in amongst normality, not obsessively chasing it. Too soap opera.

My biggest critique of this season is it’s too inwardly focused on the inner feelings of of the main characters. Kind of boring.

I feel like that was kind of. A big part of the earlier seasons as well? It's one of the biggest strengths of the show to be frank.

Here's the difference; it's one thing to have Hank give Bobby a lawnmower blade sharpening stone, and then when he breaks it be really disappointed, or if he learns to use it to sharpen the blade, for Hank to be very proud. It's another to center a whole episode around a solipsistic relationship

plot involving just how proud Hank is of Bobby's chef skills, to the point it's like a soap opera. Heart comes out of relationship things that happen tangential to life taking place, not as the centerpiece of it. See what I'm saying? One is about an external story where you can see the heart

in what happens, the other is a melodrama that's all about their relationship without there being some external event taking place that develops it.
