I've been saying for years that high school kids really don't need 4 years of math. If they're going into a field with numbers, they'll take those courses in college. What they NEED is practical life skills: finances, filling out applications, basic car/home maintenance, and REAL co-ed sex ed.

I've never understood why basic finance (how to balance a checking account, etc) was not taught alongside the home economics (literally how to make biscuits and wash clothes) class we were required to take.

The most urgent need is for teaching of critical thinking skills; everything else follows from those. Everyone needs to learn how to evaluate sources of information, and understand that misinformation is rampant.

Your statement isn’t entirely true. Most states do offer Econ in high school … but it’s an elective, AP (advanced placement), or coach-taught … and on and on. If you really want to make it stick, bring back Home Ec. A consumer ed class would solve a lot of our problems.
