I think the reasons "Trump old" never stuck is a) the people who could make that story stick liked Trump and wanted him to win and b) Trump is as much of symbol now that he is a real person.

Oh I absolutely agree with point a), and trying to shake that from friends was tough, and yeah there’s a lot to be said about how point b) is how we got here
