I think you’re overlooking that Franco took over a Catholic country. Catholicism is already centralized repressive authoritarianism. Any country that has had catholic leaders for centuries is primed to accept authoritarian rule. See: Spanish Inquisition

It’s less than 50 years since Franco died. People my age (72) must still remember. Here in the US, the last veterans of WWII are dying and their children are old. The memories of the horrors of that past are fading and the rise of Christian Nationalism and the path to a dictatorship are growing
Here in Spain many people have not told their descendants what they experienced in the Civil War. They were all so damaged that they preferred to bury certain things in their memories. My grandparents never wanted to tell me about that time. Both my grandfathers took part in it.👇
