I just hope that the voters take a cue from the behaviour that has been working for Republicans to keep them winning elections, which is to SUPPORT WHOEVER WINS THE PRIMARY. Being Party Loyal is an imperative. Being Independent doesn't work in America anymore.

Well, the ideology that framed Republicans was the Bible. They chose to split away from the Democratic Party because they wanted to do the Christian thing and END SLAVERY. However, they dropped the ball after the war. They became the industrialists' party, while Democrats were once the RURAL party.
Then, Richard Nixon and Barry Goldwater made a concerted effort to use racism as a way to attract White southern voters to the Republican Party. Also, the Democrats championed Civil Rights and became interested in protecting the Safety Net created by FDR. So, everything has flip-flopped.
