This is from an Assyrian ritual commentary. They know writers who use subtext and they're all cowards.

[The ki]ng, who opens the vat in the race, is Marduk, who [defeat]ed Tiamat with his penis. (combat motif)

I do love the bit of the Enuma Elish describing the birth of Marduk. It's basically lines and lines of 'You think these other gods are cool? Marduk has more eyes than them. Marduk has more ears than them. Marduk can shoot lasers out of his eyes. Even when he was a baby, Marduk was buff as fuck.

You can't even imagine how great Marduk because your brain would melt. You can't look at how great Marduk is because your eyes would fall out. You know how gods have haloes? Not any more. They all had to give them to Marduk. Marduk has ALL THE HALOES.' This isn't even that much of a paraphrase.

When our kid's old enough, I might petition for the school to do this instead of the usual nativity play.

I vaguely remember Anna once telling us about her school full of Oxford academics’ children putting on a very PG play of Gilgamesh only to be shocked years later finding out what the scene with Enkidu and Shamhat was actually about.
