Unless you're using a VPN you are already easily identifiable
Unless you're using a VPN you are already easily identifiable
VPNs don't offer much if any additional privacy over HTTPS. You're offering bad advice.
Even if you ARE using a VPN, you could be identified - depending on the VPN. If you're using a VPN that has agreements with governments to pass on their information and tracks the usage of their customers, then you're still being tracked. I suggest using products like ProtonVPN or open source VPNs
I use a VPN and I got the message and wasn’t able to log in.
Make sure you're controlling your location manually. If you just choose "united states" it may auto choose a server close to you thats still in Mississippi. Most will let you choose a different one in a different city or state. Then fully close and reopen bluesky
They can still identify you, they just identify you somewhere else. Chances are they sniff the VPN and identify you as nowhere, and use other metrics to determine your location.
VPNs do NOT provide anonymity, sites can still use stored cookies and the account you’re logged in to for identifying you. The point of a VPN is to remotely connect to a private network as if the device was physically there.
They can.. if you allow them to. If you are smart enough to get a VPN, you also block the vast majority of trackers/cookies. Using an encrypted DNS also prevents your IP from being seen by most ad networks. TOR also exists.
Well then they don't need to make new laws and regulations about it, do they?
VPNs don't do shit except encrypt your traffic between your ISP and your connection. They're EASILY traceable. People need to stop relying only on 1 tool for privacy.
VPN isn't magic. You're easily identifiable the second you log in even with a VPN.
You’re almost as easily identifiable while using a VPN
to be fair vpn users can also be easily identified depending on what they do and when they do it, or if they use a malicious / poorly implemented vpn service.
You're not helping anything at all. Do you want a cookie or something?
Only the essential ones.
I love how everyone took a piss on out of that rude ass statement.
I actually ratio'd him, people just want to make jokes. He was rude first.
Someone say “cookie”?

Is this the line for cookies?
Yes, this is the line for voluntary mass surveillance!
In this line everyone gets a cookie.

I think the point is they don't need new legislation for this.
The second part of the sentence is " and enable censorship and suppression of speech. " That part they do
How so?
only the ones required for site functionality, please. no non essential cookies
People are obsessed with cookies but it's your IP the true problem
What kind you got?
Gimme the cookie. Now.
You might want to look up how VPNs work..
I know how they work; I was a network engineer at one point in my career. Please show where my statement was wrong; I didn't say VPNs guarantee anonymity; I said not using one guarantees you will not be anonymous
You missed the point. The government is getting your consent to identify yourself with this law. It has no basis to do so otherwise, legally.
It goes further than that
The U.K has blocked some vpns an there tryna block more, so even vpns aren't safe anymore. At least for the U.K
Incorrect. Also VPNs do not protect source and destination addresses of traffic, just the content that’s being passed in the traffic.
The main way we're identified, i.e. through large scale data collection of online behavior isn't really affected all that much by using a VPN. VPNs sometimes help a little but they're not a panacea.
can you explain more about this?
A VPN isn’t going to keep you safe from government level surveillance
