Same reason he started with the “it’s CPC, not CCP” thing and now insists on calling Tibet “Xizang”—he was told to. Interestingly, seeing that UN resolution thing there, he’s never insisted we call Inner Mongolia “Nei Menggu” or China itself “Zhongguo”. Love the consistency.

That's not even true either!!! The official romanisation is with gh!!! It's just they settled on a weird idiosyncratic spelling of the region's official name before formalising the current romanisation and, as is typical for China, don't want to admit any mistake was made to change it accordingly
