Thank you. Embracing the feeling will be my mantra this year
As a parent, something thing that helps me feel semi-competent is remembering that I only need to be a step or 2 ahead Many of us are used to having a wealth of knowledge that comes with teaching something over & over.... this makes life easier, but isn't fully necessary in order to teach something
This helps, that’s for sure. Thank you. I think I’ve done a good job of building this new course (Physics 2) to rely on existing materials out here on the Internet.
What’s the new course? I’m tackling Stats for the first time. Haven’t taken stats since 1986. 😬😬😬😬👵🏼👵🏼👵🏼👵🏼
I feel like for most HS math teachers, that's the class. Every school has the "stats guru," when they move on somebody else is assigned to it and has to re-learn it all (and thus become the next "stats guru")
When I was math DC, we made an effort to have multiple "stats folks" in our 15-member dept. I was so proud of this fact that I used to put in our promo materials (we're an indep school) that while most schools had one stats knowledgable person, we had many. Importantly..... 1/2
...it's near impossible to properly distribute stats material across the curriculum (from A1 through Calc) if there is only one person who has a full grasp of it. And it's essential that students understand statistical ideas even if they never end up taking a full stats class. 2/2
I’ve tried to incorporate “stats week” in my department. Drop what you’re doing (in geom, algebra, etc) and do a week or two of stats. Usually between MLK, Jr weekend and our February vacation - a good time to pause curriculum. Stats stuff is always the end of the book so we miss it
This is our first time offering stats!
Congratulations - such an important topic!
that's exciting! i never taught it, but have seen many people have it added to their plate and after the initial overwhelmingness of it all, really embraced and loved the class....
I’m trying to pre-embrace it. I now know the difference between a histogram and a bar graph! #summerreading
