I haven’t seen it for years but will re-watch. It’s available on the Kanopy app, free through many public libraries.

In a fascist regime, it quickly becomes existential and life-threatening for artists, especially as actors. Perhaps having to give up art altogether or subordinate everything to art becomes the Gretchen question. 1936 - Klaus Mann vilified Gustaf Gründgens as an unscrupulous follower in "Mephisto".

Good call. I need to go back and watch it and the other two directed by István Szabó and starring Klaus Maria Brandauer, Colonel Redl and Hanussen.

I’m really hesitant to watch anything that is timely in this day and age. Do they get out of the horror at the end? Otherwise I may have to wait until we’re in another place.

Timely indeed. We’ve seen this movie play out on the world stage during the 1930’s. We know how it ends, but why are so many pretending not to know what Darth Marmalade and his handlers are planning? I just really hope we are able to get to the third act of this fascist reboot quickly.
