This is why progressives are wary of democrats who put their faith in "good" billionaires.

40 years of removing tax responsibilities of richest Americans, how dare they contribute tax, reinvest in growth or be regulated. Their “innovation” myth (monopoly power) is “critical”, wages must be squeezed, healthcare cut, unions busted. Old & true story of rich bs: prospect.org/power/want-e...

I'm sure that 3% on wealth exceeding $1B would have really been devastating for him. Breaking the fabric of our government and society is surely preferable to that.

There's been, I think, a few cycles of media pushing the "Cuban for president" rhetoric at this point. He's not the worst billionaire in the world but that doesn't make him a good person or fit to represent the American people.

Seems clear there is a set of @mcuban.bsky.social type guys who pretend to hate Trump so they don't look too bad, but in end, will always hold their noses for MAGA if it means protecting their (often many) millions or billions. Ofc they will support centrist Dems who don't threaten their capital.

Billionaires, especially American billionaires, have a pathological inability to not be greedy, to pay their fair share, to not think in anything but wealth accumulation. It's a sickness.

You can't have a just society--especially one where the federal minimum wage is $7.25 (or even $15) an hour--if individual citizens are able to hoard billions of dollars.

The idea that people shouldn't be able to accumulate great wealth is un American. Don't get me wrong if you make great wealth you make it using the infrastructure, labor , and business environment we all share and pay for and you should pay more because you got more out of it.

We live in a world where Donald Trump is able to shake down his enemies *because* we live in a world where people like Cuban are able to hoard billions of dollars and use those billions as leverage to avoid paying things like capital gains tax.

Unrealized capitol gains are not Capitol gains and should not be taxed as such. it 's not having Billions that is the problem iT's the influence.

And where, pray tell, does that influence come from? When one can live off one’s unrealized gains & pay less in taxes than a wage worker, things are broken & ultra wealthy folks are dodging their responsibilities.

Personally I am a lot more interested in stopping their influence than taking their money. Influence comes from buying media time. Elon in the last election is the perfect example, until we get people in congress willing to tax the fuckers talk about how is a joke.

until citizens united is removed money is influence? even though it's always been influence the flow of domestic and foreign funds into the arena has made this all more uncontrolled. it needs to be taxed back to what it was in the 50s to make actual growth and diversity happen.

Jeff Byrnes 🚰 🏙️ @thejeffbyrnes.com

Sure, so do I. People with hundreds of millions or billions in wealth can borrow against their unrealized gains in ways you & I cannot, and this can live off of those gains w/o ever realizing them. Your & my unrealized gains aren’t the same as theirs b/c it’s a different order of magnitude.

I would not argue Billionaires should pay more taxes( Buffett agrees) But a bad tax, an unfair tax, or a stupid tax, isn't the answer. As for influence the control there comes from election finance laws, you want to make a real difference thats where u go. Unrealized gains is just theft.

A bad (as in regressive) tax would be to tax _all_ unrealized gains. Nobody’s suggesting that. Set the threshold quite high to avoid penalizing any of us lucky enough to invest in the markets (like you & me) & it becomes progressive instead. E.g., MA Fair Share Amendment, marginal income taxes.

How else would you tax billionaires? The assets that power their lives are unrealized. We’d have to have some sort of tax on that wealth to make them pay their share.

Wealth Taxes in Europe Wealth tax is charged annually on the total value of your net assets, distinguishing it from income or capital gains tax, which are event-driven. everything from real estate, business interests and investments to savings, fine art, and other valuable personal possessions.

The fact that Cuban cannot think outside of money/taxes says everything about him and our system. Ordinary people are being arrested and deported for the civil offence of being in the US without legal status. Ordinary people that work fifty times harder than any rich American, don't have healthcare.
