The central premise of The Biggest Loser is that anyone can save themself if they're motivated and willing to work hard. And the implication is that society doesn't need to invest in universal healthcare (let alone UBI or reparations) because we'll all be fine if people just take care of themselves.

Wellness, mindfulness, self-care, it’s all garbage that the bosses want to cram down our throats so we won’t complain about how they are getting rich off our backs. Don’t give me wellness, hire more people and pay me more so that work isn’t crushing my body and soul.

Thanks for bringing attention to this. How about corporate responsibility to not make myriads of detrimentally sugary foods so cheap and easily accessible? Or lack of walkable communities, bike paths (sociable, movement oriented infrastructure)? Or, yes, healthcare that anyone can access affordably.

Yep. Jillian Michaels always was an obnoxious D-List celebrity asshole. Her current run as an obnoxious asshole trumphumper was inevitable.

“Why didn’t Keith just take care of himself?” (About a character in one of my books). I go on to describe Keith’s life and circumstances. The questioner usually goes quiet.

I cannot tell you how often I get this response when I give talks about American healthcare.

Its also the implication that those who are not fine are that way because of personal choices.
