Oregon could become the second U.S. state to require electric vehicle owners to enroll in a pay-per-mile program as lawmakers begin a special session Friday to fill a $300 million transportation budget hole that threatens basic services like snowplowing and road repairs. https://to.pbs.org/47lfh7U

People complain but as technology changes the way we live our lives, so must the way we fund our infrastructure. We still need $ to repair & maintain the roads EVs share w/ gas vehicles. Now we can always tax the rich, but until someone actually has the courage to do so, it falls on us.

The Federal gas tax hasn't been raised in multiple decades, and the same goes for most states. It has been untouchable. Start there. Like cigarettes, tax based on the harm caused. When the energy transition is further along, then consider these fees.

Good. Why shouldn’t EV owners pay for the roads, same as everyone else?

You know, I was initially upset/annoyed, but only $0.023/mile isn't too high of a cost; granted my EV maxes out at (potentially) 70-80 miles so I'm not driving all that much But as we move towards more EVs and fewer gas cars, there's going to have to be some sort of funds transition.

So are they going to tax people who ride a bike as their main mode of transport? If they target just EVs that sounds unfair.

Bikes don't give roads potholes. Bikes don't cause major accidents, delaying 1000s of people and requiring special equipment to clear the road.

This was predicted back in 2005 at the SME conference. And it only makes sense. Someone has to pay for the roads. But trucks and other such vehicles also have to be enrolled. Including off-road, since 1) they do damage and 2) it will discourage misuse of off-road on road.

Exactly. EVs don't pay the gas taxes that fund roads. Users of the roads should pay for the roads they drive on. Driving an EV is still cheaper, cleaner and lower cost - even with $0.01/mi tax added on. (average recommended EV road tax) The devil will be in the details though for sure.

But Oregon has been one of the states with the most EV vehicles for some time now. This was inevitable, why wouldn't they update/make changes years ago? They waited until the last minute hoping to be bailed out by idk who. Now the "people" have to pay. Smh

Honey, the “people” have to pay for everything. If the EV owners got by without it for awhile, good for them. But roads and repairs aren’t free.

And I am already subsidizing with my substantially additional fees when I buy my license plate sticker. The trucks ruin the roads while the CEOs make 50m a year. The companies need to pay to repair the roads they use to make a profit. You and I are trying to get to work. Regardless I don’t use gas.

I already pay more than double the license plate sticker. Thst was supposed to cover it. The corporations making billions off the trucks ruining the roads should be paying. I’m already paying when I get my sticker. Stop giving CEOs 50 million a year

I already pay for this through the additional charge added to my license plate sticker. The roads are destroyed by trucks making a profit. They need to stop paying CEOs 50mil a year and pay their fair share. I’m just going to work. You all are not holding big biz accountable.

why not like the Netherlands: - have gasoline and energy taxes (probably in place) - and separate road taxes for all. Better is road taxes based upon say the pollution it does in the total lifecycle: I would say gasoline 100% and EV 70% of the weight multiplied by the tax factor.
