If they aren’t identifying themselves, cops should assume they are criminals impersonating federal law endorsement. It should be easy enough for any legit federal LEO to verify their IDs to the local cops.

This won't allow them to arrest ICE agents. Its to address a handful of copycat situations where some ones and 2s tried to rob people impersonating cops. LAPD arent going to do anything about the ICE task force and the vast majority of these situations except help.

That im not clear on. I dont know the LA city policies/laws on her direct oversight ability. I think she has the power of the purse strings to some extent that can affect some things as well as the ability to change laws affecting them sure.
But this is an LAPD policy, not a mayoral policy. That's where this gets silly because it's letting the enforcers oversight on themselves.

The L.A. Mayor appoints the Police Chief, but the Police Commission (a 5-member civilian oversight board) plays a crucial role & also sets overall LAPD policy. The Chief reports to the Police Commission & the rest of the dept reports to the Chief. And then there are more layers. It's complex.
Thanks! I’m a fan of Mayor Bass, but imagined a more direct relationship between Mayor and Police Chief. It probably makes sense to have an apolitical bureaucratic layer between them. Still, I strongly feel that a city or state should be able to defend itself from this kind of federal invasion.
Yes, I do, too. A critical problem is that Trump is allowed to deny federal funding to Calif if we do not cooperate with ICE. We pay more federal taxes than any other state, & we get already get less than we pay in. If we get NOTHING back, the Calif economy will become unsustainable.
I share all of your concerns, but I got stuck on the “…Trump is allowed…” part of your reply and decided to Google it. What I found, copied below is encouraging, but it seems there is always the possibility of a “checkmate” from SCOTUS!
It's hard for me to keep track of the funds that Trump has already withheld from Calif, versus the funds he's signed executive orders to withhold, & the funds he threatens he'll withhold. Every day brings more threats. It will all be litigated up to the Supreme Court, which is in Trump's pocket.
The mayor cannot order the LAPD to do anything illegal. I cannot list the entirety of what the mayor can do or cannot do. In our system, the federal government has more power than local governments.
And given the fact that when confronted for warrants and ID they have refused to produce them I’m sure we’re going to find a lot of these clowns are not ICE but random thugs told they can do what they want.

Perhaps their job is not what you think it is. Perhaps their power is not all-encompassing. The feds have more power than local gov't. This will be decided in a court of law rather than with a magic wand.

Except that wont happen and the policy isn't going to affect these giant task force raids. The policy is because there have been a handful of copycats. It will just put even more cops on the scene while ICE beats on the public.
That is a good idea: to not just verify who they are but to capture that info on LAPD body cams so it can be pulled up later if needed. Also smart to demand a supervisor.

The fact that ICE is so determined to not ID themselves makes me think they’re trying to get away with worse stuff than they would if they ID’d. Maybe they’ll be less horrible if they see a possibility of being held responsible by someone. Actual impersonators are also bad: robbers, kidnappers, etc
But this wont hold ICE accountable. It wont even identify the majority, just a supervisor and just to an LAPD supervisor. Then LAPD will sit there and help control any crowd and work for ICE on the scene. Seems like it wont be a net positive overall.

I wrote letters to Chief McDonnell asking him to support and enforce the law. I asked him to protect citizens and to protect the horses that were being mistreated by LAPD mounted officers. More people should reach out to him. It’s a reminder that his responsibility is to protect LA, not ICE

Good, this should have been happening a long time ago. If they can’t produce ID, then they should be arrested.
Read the policy completely. If someone calls 911 and reports a kidnapping and LAPD shows up, then sees it's the ICE task force a LAPD supervisor will verify the lead agents creds and ita all done. That's gonna happen in the vast majority. It may help a few people being robbed, thats it.
