Fantastic story. The mini series is pretty good, though I think they change the ending too much.
Fantastic story. The mini series is pretty good, though I think they change the ending too much.
His best book!
yeah he was a Great writer, until Trump moved into his brain and fucked him up by just existing.
An amazing book! I have read it so many times, but I do remember the excitement of my first read—Enjoy your first read of this great story.
One of my favorite books of all time. I’ve probably read it at least 25 or 30 times.
That one is about as good as it gets — phenomenal. And very fitting for today’s times! 📖
My favorite. By far. The start is so realistic and then you are in utter chaos. Love The Stand.
You reminded me of reading it back in the late 70’s. I forged my own standard of “couldn’t put it down” when I’d pull it out of my parka to read it on the lifts while skiing at Copper Mountain.
Great book!!!
I liked Stephen King from the beginning but learning he’s a great human tripled that. I would even buy a phone book if he ever releases one.
I’ve probably read it ten times now. Great book!
I started it on a Friday. Took short breaks to eat and sleep but finished Sunday night, very, very late. Just couldn’t stop. I like everything he’s written, but this is my favorite.
The Stand is one of his best. Try the Gunslinger series next! There you will be introduced to Lobstrosities........
Book 9 ends with the same sentence with which book 1 begins.
Just started III
The Wastelands is the adventure story in the series (each can be said to be a different genre). It’s a lot of fun and the book where the series really hits its stride. When you finish, pls pause a moment & think of us who read them as they came out and had to wait like 5 years for the next book 😂
It seems that way! Been a big King fan and glad I have finally taken the leap. Ugh I couldn’t imagine waiting…;)
I finished that book like (and ditched class to read the fourth book the day it was released YEARS LATER)
I was going to say the Gunslinger Series is one of my Favs. I've read them all twice so far.
Read that years ago. Fabulous and at the time it scared me. Living dead wasn't around, zombies were not a thing, so everyone gone was a frightening idea then.
One of my favorites!
I think this is my favorite of all his books...so many story telling layers.
Read every Darkman, Richard Fannin, RF book that he pops into.
I began reading this when I was 12, unbeknownst to me at the time, coming down with the flu. Consumed by the book, as I read I started experiencing symptoms. It spooked me thinking I was catching what they had in the story I tossed the book into a drawer and resumed reading it a year later. 😂
I read it when it first came out and it chilled me. One of his better books I believe.
My favorite Stephen King novel... although after COVID, I'm not sure if it shouldn't be moved to non-fiction. It's an incredible read...
One of his best books.
It's been one of my favorite books for over 30 years! ❤️
I read it in one night, couldn't put it down.
Great book!
Yes! I read it twice, 20 years apart.
It's my favorite King book - so good!
Have that same one in softcover. It’s a great read.
An American classic.
That was my first Stephen King book. None after came even close. Damn good indeed.
Also under the dome. Chef is the best.
Finished the unabridged full cut or whatever a few years ago and I still think about that book probably once a week. Love it. Check out Swan Song sometime too. Similar vibes.
It’s a great book! Couldn’t put it down.
It is and always will be a classic.
One of my favorites.
Definitely his best work. Kudos for tackling the long version. I read it when it first came out, then re-read the unabridged version when it was released.
I read that decades ago as a young man. I agree it was excellent. I just finished Under The Dome last week. He hasn’t slowed down even a bit.
Believe it or not, loved the uncut version WAY more.
I read it in the 80s. Such a great book!
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve read The Stand. It’s one of my absolute favorites
m-o-o-n, that spells good writing
@stephenking.bsky.social
My folks sent a copy to me on the USS Tattnall when it was brand new. I read it in three days. Still my favorite of all his books. Bought the unabridged version when it came out, too. Enjoy the rest!
I felt the story right after the plague was very accurate. That after such a decimated population there would be percentage who would die because they were incapable of surviving or coping with what happened. Then you had some people forming gangs to steal supplies and weapons and enslave others.
Loved the book, and loved the original tv miniseries.
You're in for a treat.
I have it, but I have so many other books to read ATM. My dad INSISTED on having the family watch the movie when my sister and I were old enough. 4 VHS tapes. It was good, but having a kid sit still for that long is a damn miracle. 😂
THE GREEN MILE is exceptional as well.
Also really liked needful things
I've read it several times. One of the best!!
Yeah Steven King's a pretty good writer.
Great book but if you have never read the book that inspired it, I recommend that you do.
My absolute favorite King novel.
I got the unabridged version when it first came out back in 1989. I managed to get to page 200, and got so scared I gave the hardcover to a friend and never asked for it back. This was, without question, King’s earliest masterpiece. The first of many.
Robert McCammon's Swan Song, is better.
I reread this book every 4 years or, it's that good.
It’s my favorite! I have read it several times.
One of my all time favourite books. 👍
My all time favorites of all Stephens books. The sublime between the lines articulation always astounds me. My favorite description is the dogs...
Loved that book! I haven't read a bad Stephen King book.
My husband’s favorite book.
When it first came out, I read it 3 times, and when the movie came out, I also watched it more than once. It's like it predicted the future, Covid virus, and ends with Good over evil. We're just waiting for the evil to destroy itself.
This was one of his best books, just my opinion. They made it into an 8 hour mini=series for tv, turned out pretty good.
There are two. I prefer the earlier one with Molly Ringwald, Gary Sinise, Rob Lowe, etc.
That's the one I was talking about. Shit, I didn't know they made another version.
The newer one isn't bad but tells the story nonlinearly, which I didn't care for. Plus, I thought Jamey Sheridan as Randall Flagg was a casting masterstroke. Had a hard time with the new guy as a result.
I haven't checked out the cast for the second one yet, but I thought the cast of the first one was great. The director said''The easiest call was Bill Fagerbakke aa Tom Cullen'' I thought it was an all star cast and Ray Walston was a perfect choice for his part. I'm not a big fan of remakes or seque
My 19 yr old self in 1980 had always thought Brad Davis would have made a great Stu Redmond.
One of the all time great miniseries openings, and perfect use of Blue Oyster Cult music in the beginning .
That opening sequence got my dad to watch the series! He was way less than interested but my mom was a huge fan of the novel.
The whole beginning about the spread of the disease and the response to it was riveting. Such a good cast too. The last 1/4 kinda lost steam tho
Saw Biden as old Mother Abigail and Trump as brash Flagg.
Good analogy
One if my favorite Stephen King books. His early stuff was great.
It's so good! I'm glad you're enjoying it.
My favorite book of all time.
If you get the digital version, you get all the pages, there's a couple hundred or more extra pages.
This was the first Stephen King book I read (when I was about 13) and OMG it changed me. Still one of my favorites to this day.
I am still trying to go see life of Chuck which is nowhere around me 😡 about to consider the 5 hour drive LOL
Years ago, my sister gave my son a Stephen king novel, so I decided I should read it to know what my son was reading. I was hooked! Regardless of the genre, he’s is a fine, fine writer. So glad you’re enjoying the stand. My kids always saw me reading-now grown, they do too. Real books!🤗
@bsky.app Edit button please!
Hmmm, shifting antigen flu virus released from some lab just stretches my credibility so I have had to read it at least 10 times since publication.
Excellent story telling. I read that when it first came out. Just got done reading 'Guns' by Stephen King. Perfect analogy of guns in America. Plan on starting "You like it darker" shortly
It gets better!
I read it in two days during summer vacation from college. Oh, to have no responsibilities again. Lol
My all-time favorite! Have read it 3x. This book terrified me as it “could” happen.
I remember the OG miniseries with ‘Don’t fear the Reaper’ ages ago. I probably read this when I was a teenager but I’ve been into his stuff about Holly Gibney lately and it’s so good!
They reissued it last year I think? I nabbed it on Blu-ray as I remembered it so so well too!
Yep. You can purchase it digitally from Apple.
Every time I hear it, I think of that opening, which I don’t think I’ve seen since the original airing — super memorable! I swear I told someone about it in the last month, when DFTR was on the radio wherever we were. (Maybe when I was waiting to go into surgery? I recall it felt like bad timing.)
also, prescient. cause we’re there
www.filmsnest.com/movie/the-gi...
One of his best books.
it is one of his best reads
I read the abridged version when it was first released and it’s still one of my favorites. I plan to read the uncut edition soon.
It is definitely one of his best imo. I have read it three times so far I think and listened to it on audible once. I may have another listen soon, it's just that good.
This book is one of my favorites
On it!
My favorite King book. Reread it during COVID.
My all time favorite SK book. Read this in the early 80s and have never forgotten this epic story. One of Kings finest stories.
I read that when I was deployed, took me less than a week because I had nothing else to do. Might read it again since its been a while
Been number one on my reading list for years and years! Enjoy!
It's in my top five all time. Tremendous work.
One of his best And, it ties into the Dark Tower Universe
Loved dark tower too.
Just finished it recently myself. Enjoy the ride!
Great book.
One of the best ever.
I love this book! Definitely one of his best.
This exact edition was the One Book I chose to take on a trip to Vegas several years back. Didn't realize the connection 'til I was on my way, didn't regret it one bit.
One of my all-time fave books. I've read it three times in the past thirty years.
Read my first Stephen King book 48+ years ago, and have read every single one since then. I can only hope that he never stops writing, and that I go before he does.
My all time favorite book 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
One of my all time favorites!
I've lost count of the number of times I have read this book (both the original and the gargantuan unedited version). Really an outstanding piece of work.
There’s an edited version? Just shows you how long ago I read it. It had just come out.
Mr. King likes to write doorstop-size. The "unedited, writer's cut" version is an extra 300-ish pages. Here's more.
Yes...all the books I've read of his are tomes!
One of, if not the most favorite of my King books. I re-read it every year. Just finished it, myself.
Flagship.
I love the audiobook version.
I remember the first time I read it as a teen. Think I finished it in a day and a half. Reading as fast as I do is kind of a curse. On the TV note you can find the 1994 mini series of it for purchase through Apple. Do NOT watch the more recent one that streamed on Paramount+ It is shit.
Cujo was one of my favorites, the book was from the dogs standpoint, the movie made the dog a monster, The book was so much better....
Awesome book....
One of the best books I've ever read.
Great book. Just don't ruin it all by watching any of the mini-series made from it. None have been up to par.
Best King novel imo
Awesome book!
A great book
Told you it was worth it
I remember reading The Stand before I graduated in ‘80 and it blew me away! When I hear “I wanna sleep with you in the desert tonight” I am thrown back to when I first read this book.
I have read, and re-read this book several times. My original 1980 paperback that I read as a college freshman is held together by black electrical tape. Was very excited when the expanded version came out, and read that! After you finish The Stand, might I suggest the Dark Tower series?
Randall Flagg. Great story telling.
I read it 45 years ago, when I was 21. I stayed up all night reading and I had to work the next day. It was a great book.
It's a fantastic book. If you haven't read it, The Dark Tower series ties into this book heavily (and most of King's other books too).
Great book. One of his very best
Just finished reading "Ward D" a psychological thriller by Freida McFadden. It was good, takes place on a pysch ward. The ending is a bit of a twist.
Have you read King's "The Institute"?
No, do you recommend it?
Yes, but then again - there are very few of his books that I WOULDN'T recommend 🤷♀️
Thanks
It’s an excellent read. Glad people get to immerse themselves in the full version as the default now.
One of my faves.
I’ve read the book several times and the tv series!! Incredible writing! Also enjoyed “Salem’s Lot”, it helped me keep my room clean, and “The Gunslinger” such adventures!! Enjoy 😊
I have 2 copies. Love this, but hits a little close to home on some levels. First book of his I read was Rhe Shining. Have read a lot of his stuff. All good reads.
One of the best books ever An epic in the true sense
One of my all time favorites and I read A LOT! So, so good.
Then don't start with Dark Tower... 😋
A great story I first read in 1979, my junior year in high school.
I read that book when it came out and for ages after, every time I got a bad cold, I would freak out and stayed vigilant for Randall Flagg dreams.
This is one of my favorite books. I’ve been wanting to read it again. I think it might be even more intense post Covid and with the current political situation in the US factored in.
Amazing book. Love the world building he does in it
11/22/63 is another of my favorites of his.
Such a good book...I need to reread.
It was great to re-read that during the pandemic.
I did too, lol.
Yes Stephen King is the Rick star of writers
Read this while I was in college one Texas summer when I lived in an apartment with no AC and no TV. It was the only thing that kept me sane. Still remember it as one of my best reads.
It's excellent.
I read it twice through when I was a kid. Love that story.
First read it in 1985, and I had a cold at the time. Read the unabridged version in 1990, and I had a cold at the time. Seems like the perfect book for when you're stuck at home with COVID.
Captain Trips!
You’re in for a treat! Such a great summer read.
I've enjoyed that book a few times.
The Trump plague reminded me of this book. At the time I referred to Trump as Captain Tripps. He's turning out to be the trashcan man.
Unless the mini series was totally different from the book. Trump is Flagg. Trashcan man gave his life for others
You're right about him being Flagg. I was just reminded of who could really be the trash can man. And frankly it could be any one of those ass kissing Nazi lovers.
Flagg was his character real name. Captain Tripps was what they called the plague I believe. I read the book years ago. Trash can man gave his life for Flagg. Everything he did was for him. No the mini series was pretty point on the book. Trash can man was yelling my life for you to Flagg.
Stephen Miller would be more of the Trashcan Man, or Maybe Rubio.
You're right! Trump is Flagg.
When this book came out, I was reading a part of it while in line at the supermarket. Someone behind me coughed, then sneezed. I put my basket down at an empty check-out and almost ran out of the store.
Saw contagion at a movie theater. I faked a couple sneezes in the garage elevator. Interesting reactions is all I will say.
I saw Outbreak at the movies. That scene where one person in the front sneezes—not covering their mouths—and they show the droplets fly through room. That horrified me! 😄 I
My absolute favorite novel by Stephen King. I read it in a few days about 30 years ago.
A great choice, and a true masterpiece in storytelling. My favorite King book.
I read that 3x! 😱
One of the best books I have ever read! 2x and 1x audiobook!
That has to be one of his best!
Phenomenal book 😍 & enjoyed both the series.
Have fun if you read more! Don’t watch or stream it.
I won't spoil anything, but in usual King fashion he takes a great story and characters then demonstrates that whatever dream he had didn't include the ending, so he just tacked on something that made absolutely no sense whatsoever.
Read it decades ago but I ended reading straight through.. now THAT’s a book !! 😂
I really enjoyed it!
My fave book. I read it every 10 years and always take away something different. It is brilliant.
One of his best.
I bought this when it first came out in paperback. I started reading it at around 10:30 am and couldn’t put it down. I finished around 3 am. I had to see whether good or evil won. My favorite SK novel.
I read it when it came out while I was stuck in bed with the flu. 🤦🏻♀️
I was a Stephen King fan before and after The Stand was published, but it is still my all time favorite. I have donated most of my hard bound books over the years, but I still have my original version of The Stand.
My copy looks exactly like that. That's what happens when one devours a great book.
Have read it a few times, it's awesome!
My favorite book!! When you're done get 11/22/63. It's right up there with The Stand.
Loved 11/22/63!!! Belive it or not, didn't read it till recently, couldn't put it down!!!
It's in my top 10 fiction works.
One of my all time favorite novels.
One of the best books EVER!
The Stand got me hooked on Stephen King. It has stayed with me longer than any of his other books.
Great book!
It’s timeless, isn’t it?
That is the book that got me hooked on Stephen King. I've read just about everything he's written!
I habitually reread this every couple of years. Get more from it each time.
I always reread his books and rewatch his movies. I always miss things.
Yeah, there is so much.
One of my favorites. I have read it several times (first in the early 80s). When Covid started, I thought , “Uh-oh, I know this story and I think we’re screwed.”
Same!! Love the book, read it in the ‘80s and thought of “Captain Trips” as soon as COVID hit!!
The Stand is likely the Best Book He ever wrote or ever written possibly. I would put it up against most books published. The story, the wording, it makes this an Awesome read.
We finally finished the book on tape - all 47 hours or so. An incredible book and the rendition on tape was so well done. If you have a long road trip planned do it!!!
Yeah....takes a grip to get into, but once he's got you, it's all over!
It's my favorite of his books. I'm not a horror fan, but this is one of the best books I've ever read. Salem's Lot is up there, too.
Check out "Needful Things" next - absolutely fantastic all by itself - made even BETTER if you've read the stuff from his Dark Tower series since there's some crossover.
This was my first book when I was 16. I collected all his books and am still doing it. His voice is in my head and gets me.
I go back every 5 years or so and read it again….when they say books transport you…this is what they are talking about
Oh yes, Stephen King! ⚡
An excellent novel!
I’ve started this book 3-4 times, always from the beginning. I get so deep and then life happens and I put it down. One of these days, I too will have read it
It’s one of his best along with “The Shining” and Misery,” I’ve read all three numerous times🤗!
I’ve never read it or seen the filmed version, but Luke Skywalker is in it?!
Hands down and out of some great novels, The Stand is still my favorite.
The stand and the langoliers and another are my favorites by him. Even the movie was good on the stand. I lived in Utah when they filmed it. They glued leaves onto each tree but it was winter when they filmed part of it on 25th Street in Ogden (I live here)
I'm not sure if there are copies still available, but there's also a 1994 TV series based on the book that I thought was quite good. Apparently there's a 2020 version as well, I'm sure someone will have an opinion on that.
It’s an awesome book; one of his best.
I read every book in the series years ago, was awesome!
My favourite
That and Shawshank are my 2 favorite King books (I would probably put IT in there too haha). I read The Stand and a bunch of King books in the early 90s when I was out at sea in the Navy and had all sorts of downtime. Will you try to watch one or both of the TV adaptations of the book?
One of my favorite books!
I had the 1990 uncut version too and was taken out of the story with weird references to Van Halen and Madonna the author made to “updated the pop culture references for the uncut edition. Anyway I tracked them all: www.reddit.com/r/books/s/YJ...
It was better with the original 1980 date, as - despite the updates - the book still felt "1970s", and a lot of references (1960s/70s cars, Redman's service in Vietnam(?)) seemed wrong for the 90s.
My all time favorite book. ❤️
It’s the one that set me down the dark path lol. I was way too young to read that shit
I started with The Eye of the Dragon at 10. Read IT when I was 12. Def too young but it is a core childhood memory.
