😆 Why? I’ve been doing this stuff my whole career. Rogers’ stuff which I remember from the time is the typical ex post justification by the British establishment of its own catastrophic failures over Brexit by blaming Johnny Foreigner. Tories wriggling out of blame for torching Britain
I think for many reasons: we knew we had a good deal, 8x the return on our investment in the single market; we had been embarrassed by Thatcher. But we let Merkel make a fool of Cameron etc. Many MEPs incl from France, Italy &. Germany said the EU interfered too heavily in nation state issues.
I don’t run seminars for students any longer, but if I did, I’d invite you to debate this issue. Yes, Brexit has been a catastrophe for us & the EU in so many ways. Putin’s & Trump’s dream is our nightmare. But Rogers is right, imo, we leant too deeply into the EU, didn’t challenge it from inside…
