I was in Daria fandom on thepaperpusher.net and they have argued about minutiae like that. The Daria fandom is surprisingly well-organized and well run, they have yearly rewards for fanfic and a wiki cataloging most of the fanfiction for Daria.

I thought this as well, but apparently Gotham and Metropolis are both polar aspects of New York City, but also Gotham is in New Jersey. That pretty much changed my mind.

One of the last shots in the new Superman, where he and Lois are floating and kissing, looks VERY much like The Arcade in Cleveland. So, maybe Metropolis is Cleveland? Or, since it's fictional, multiple cities at once?
The DC Earth is bigger in land area to the Marvel Earth, and thus has more cities, that was in one of the crossover things they did in the 90s As Marvel is meant to be our earth+capes, they're just extra cities not on our maps

My hot take: Batman is the only real world superhero who can exist. He’s a rich man who profits off an impoverished city, then destroys the city while claiming others are the villains, then profits from the rebuilding. He’s is rich enough to end the poverty, but buys lavish toys for himself instead.
There's a whole thing on how regular comic characters can't change their world. The with status quo has to be maintained to be semi-relatable to the real world and to have enemies keep coming back over the span on decades. So he really has his hands tied by the fact he's in an ongoing comic.
I was just watching a video on this last night and the latest Superman movie. It was called "Superman Isn't Jesus 4" -- I've not seen the previous 3. I'll obviously have to watch it again to remember all the details of the scholarly work involved.

Gotham is literally an old nickname for NYC & Gotham police are so notoriously corrupt because they're literally modeled off the NYPD. DC HQ was long in NYC so they of course decided that Metropolis, despite originally being Cleveland w/ a Toronto skyline, was also NYC while Gotham was New Jersey.
This is just flat out correct and has been my headcanon ever since visiting Chicago
No problem saying Gotham is NYC, but somewhere along the way my brain wanted Metropolis to be KCMO. It seemed logical, like Smallville was in Western Kansas, possibly Wichita, Salina, someplace, and KCMO is big enough and far enough from those places.
I didn't realize this was a topic for heated disagreements.
A fanfic writer I follow put Gotham City in Michigan, basically Detroit, and that is perfect IMO.
There's some precedent for Gotham being in Michigan, at least in the New 52. The first issue of Justice League (2011) has Batman pass over Detroit while flying from Gotham to Metropolis, which makes no sense geographically if Gotham is in New York and Metropolis is anywhere it's usually placed
