They should use this in journalism classrooms as the "what not to do" example. So gross. What's startling is that it will have been seen by numerous people before going to print, did no-one spot how problematic it looked? Or how fucking damaging and insensitive they were going look, for that matter?

It being in quotes is so dismissive. If you’d use the word “allegedly,” you’d probably tip a lot fewer people off to the fact that you don’t listen to the victims.
