i do think there are ambiguous movies and then there are movies that are opaquely ambiguous on purpose—my issue is with the latter

I think that’s valid. But the argument starts to lose me when applied too broadly. Fair to say Alex Garland likes this approach, but my opinion of his films are all over the map. Civil War more neutral, Annihilation didn’t care for, but Ex Machina I thought was gripping. More hit & miss vs crisis.
