When someone wants to tell me about their D&D character
When someone wants to tell me about their D&D character
As a DM, I’d rather hear about your campaign. Otherwise I run from this discussion like people trying to show me their baby photos…
Wait, where are you going? I haven't even gotten to the part where my drow bard got kicked in the groin with a metal boot!
When someone wants to tell me about their D&D character and is now 30 minutes in
"No, no, no, wait, I'm just getting to the part where their tragic backstory is different ..."
So, that means you want to hear about the exploits of my warlock elf... OH BOY
Let me tell you about my Call of Cthulhu chara- oh, wait. They died.
He's a Tiefling named The Kiefling, c'mon!
As long as you were not their DM at the time I agree completely.
Feels exactly like being told someone’s dream. First person and all.
Maybe this is all because Gail really wants to tell us about her D&D character. We’re here for you, Gail!
What if I told you that I dreamt of a D&D character?
Well since you're here and the door is locked. His name is Discard and he was abandoned as a child in a dungeon. He was raised by mimics, who for some reason took a liking to him. He's a master of disguise and can easily spot and communicate with mimics.
Ein Drunken Master Monk mit gastro-pub-Träumen - das ist der perfekte Cocktail für ein Abenteuer! Wie viele verschiedene Sorten von Bier denkst du, dass Tav in ihrem Pub anbieten wird?
But Gail, her name is Dgannys Joplin, and she's a cleric without a deity who always sleeps through half the campaign, being nudged awake only to toss a handful of d8 whenever a teammate, idk, is excessively chewed on by a bugbear or something.
What if I told you a tabletop group of mine is called The Outliers because I may have been binge reading a certain X-Men book at the time?
Her guard is down! Quickly, tell her about your D&D character! (While I plug my ears and slink away... la la la...)
That’s why you have some of these handy: (Created by @jollyblackburn.bsky.social of KenzerCo)
Which is fine until the other person is armed with these horrid artifacts!
So I have this character... ;) Don't worry, Those discussions really should be mutual things rather than inflicting an unwilling listener. I DO want to ask youy if you would like to read some of my creative writing, but agin, not a fair thing to do if unwilling. Regardless, I plan
to get something published; I've heard that if you have something up on a journal or a public archive, that publishers won't generally take it. As you've published, how true is that, and to what extent should i worry?
What's that? You want to hear about my warlock ventriloquist whose patron is actually the souls trapped in her dummy that she's trying to save? You see her story begins...
Listen, I created fantastic gloomstalker Eladrin turned Dhampir whose name is so complicated my dungeon master can't remember it! Anyways, we start in the feywild, I'm making a crown of flowers for queen Titania, when a group of vampires attack! Even if I'm level 1 I already have 20 dex, so I ran...
Is that you looking for a seat?
Yeah but my character is different...🤣🤣
Well then buckle up while I tell you about my Fleshwarp dual wielding fighter in my Pathfinder game…
My character from Baldur's Gate 3 is a Drunken Master Monk who wants to open a gastro pub in town when she's gotten rid of her pesky brain worm. Her name is Tav the Brawler.
I play TTRPGs, and this is still what I do. 😆
I cast Spell of Immobility!
I'm firmly of the opinion that if I can't tell someone about my character in under 10 seconds, they don't need to know.
I have, to my shame, been on both sides of that particular conversation over the years.
i've been following you for too long and now my brain is playing itself trying to determine if you really don't want to know about people's D&D characters, or if you're pulling the old uno reverse.
Would you rather hear about my indie comics characters? I can also provide images from my artist...
Could I read you my characters in-game journal?! After 64 sessions of the campaign, it's only 43,716 words! >_>
Ok but my D&D character is an idiotic bugbear rogue who was tricked into a map for "All the gold you cannot see" so she's on a hunt for the secret "Not-see gold" Now let me tell you about my Marvel OC
Ok, so he's a Hadozee rogue named Shanky Kong, and his backstory...
Gail is just trying to start a simple game of Yahtzee and everyone keeps trying to bring “lore” into it
What's D&D ? Sounds Fakey
Lol. I wore a D and D shirt to work the other day....
but my Ranger is so cool, though
DnD with a 2020's setting. I play a ratfolk race with 3d printers and firearms.
Or their Magic deck. 🤣 Guilty as charged, btw…
“I play as a level 12 Barbarian who only loots crypto-gold… Gail, come back!”
Okay but my bard is a funny heroic little guy and you should know about him...
My bard is slutty. She even seduced the queen of tentacles.
I've seen many videos exploring this very scenario.
But what if I tell you about how I made the rules to make characters... Ope.. No... she dove out a window...
Nobody knows anything but D&D. Pathfinder? From Nissan?
I was just thinking that it’s weird that Japan has Record of Lodoss war as its D&D equivalent and I’d love to see how they differ but I don’t think anyone has ever published the companions or rules in English and I’m curious why.
Probably because the market is saturated with world books. Everybody has a world book for something now and you can adapt anything with GURPS. If you're hardcore enough nerd you'll find the way to make niche materials. D&D and P2E have market share because they're the best known.
I suppose that’s true. I’m just surprised it didn’t make its way over during the anime boom when I would have guessed the us anime fanbase would have been very receptive
Other systems are fine though, right? So, I've got this Agent in Delta Green...
Sooo a more modern setting. She looks awesome. Never met a woman with such colourful spots.
HA! GenCon is under two weeks away, Gail. Guess how many people want to tell me about their characters there? lol I like hearing about campaigns though - just remember brevity is the soul of wit. 🥰
I never told you about Zanben "Oneshoe" Fecklebeckle, right? He's a gnome wizard botanist who was sent from Candlekeep to Icewind Dale to see if there was any truth to the rumors about plants surviving the eternal winter there. Only there was this misunderstanding on the way up in Luskan, see...
I felt this in my bones.
I have 7 D&D characters I can talk about, but my favorite is my cleric Lisette, a dhampir serving the Raven Queen. 🥰
Heh heh, i like how you're trapped here. So, anyway, my D&D character is...
So you don’t want to hear about this totally original red-haired Barbarian woman I in no way based entirely on your interpretation of Red Sonja?
😂🤣🫶🏼
Worked at a mall gaming store for 7 years where we sold a lot of TTRPGs with normal boardgames and the like. This brings back my PTSD, well between that and the Christmas shopping times. 😂🤣🤪
"Today is Jarin 12th, 1208. It has been 2 years, 3 months since you began your quest. It's been 1 year, 12 days since your resurrection by the Brotherhood. It has been 3 days since you entered the Crypt. It is difficult estimate the exact time, but it feels like morning..."
"We need to find a quiet room so I can really take this in!"
How about my B&B character? A kindly retiree....
Flashing back to wait in line at the game store where a world-weary store clerk is smiling politely as the guy at the counter entering minute fifteen of his character story.
I don't have one of my own, haven't played in years. I did however used to do character commissions for other folks. Y'know, before Arthritis stole my ability to draw. This was a friend's Tabaxi Druid she requested. Twas in the final days of drawing without sobbing in pain.
Human Resources frowns on calling what we do "MurderHoboing" on our expense reports. And could someone please tell the warlock to *not* itemize in blood? For some reason it doesn't dry and makes the paperwork sticky.
Obviously you have better things to do than hear about some schmuck's character. Like listening to me describe my assorted homebrew settings and campaign premises in elaborate detail!
Such sillies. Now let me tell you about my Arbites character in Warhammer 40k Dark Heresy campaign, where I shot a shopkeeper for heresy!
Excellent, let me tell you about a charming hobbit Chapter 1 of 238....
How about my totally awesome Patnfinder character? Just kidding, I’m the forever GM
Sorry. But let me tell you about my Verdan hexblade, Strisi. It all started in an inn. The burnt shell of which was still smoking as the water dripped from the cedar shingles that had fallen onto the pine floor…
Gail’s D&D character is named Red Sonia and she wrote a whole book about it.
I FINALLY got 1 of my students to write by asking him to tell me about his character. I will read whatever I have to if it means he WROTE MORE THAN 1 SENTENCE for the assignment.
Hope they go on to be a best selling writer. Why not start by writing really complex characters for DND, it seems a good start to writing.
I have a Nightelf Mohawk named Killgore. The thing about him is, he likes killing. And it's gory.
Which one, my stone giant thief, or my half-troll anti-paladin?
so anyways he's a pug-man paladin
D&D.. In THIS economy? . . . ...So let me tell you about my Pathfinder character.
I have a rogue named Rogue
I for one never played D&D. seriously, never played RPG boards
🤣🤣 Well, tell us about YOUR character. Also, which one? I have 6....that i played regularly. 20+ that i played...
I had a dream about my D&D character...
